Frequently asked questions
Does the Census of Agriculture report farm numbers for Sebastian?
No. USDA NASS publishes Census of Agriculture results for Indian River County as a whole, not for Sebastian, Vero Beach or Fellsmere. County figures such as the 492 farms counted in 2022 are the smallest geography available.
How many citrus acres does Indian River County have in 2026?
The preliminary August 2026 Commercial Citrus Inventory counts 6,135 acres of citrus with 999,200 trees in Indian River County. That is down from 6,827 acres in 2025 and 8,627 acres in 2023. The 2026 figures are preliminary.
Is cattle ranching growing in Indian River County?
The herd grew between censuses: 23,234 cattle and calves in 2022 against 20,334 in 2017, and beef cows rose from 13,029 to 14,109. Fewer farms keep them, though, with beef cow farms down from 193 to 163.
Why do the census and the citrus inventory give different citrus acres?
They come from different surveys. The NASS Commercial Citrus Inventory maps commercial groves with aerial photography and follows each observed change with a ground check, while the Census of Agriculture is a separate count of farms, so the two series should not be mixed.
