Places of worship — Sebastian, Florida

Sebastian's documented congregations include St. Sebastian Catholic Church on US 1, St. Elizabeth's Episcopal on Clearmont Street, Sebastian United Methodist on Main Street, Coastal Church, Sebastian Church of God and Sebastian Christian Church, with historic Allen Chapel AME in nearby Wabasso.

No public agency keeps a census of Sebastian congregations, so this page lists those whose location and worship schedule could be confirmed from the congregation itself, its denomination, the Indian River County Supervisor of Elections or local news. Times change, so each listing carries its source. Addresses are the public buildings where each congregation meets.

The list is not exhaustive. Several other Sebastian churches appear only in commercial directories, which are not used as sources here, and their details could not be confirmed directly.

St. Sebastian Catholic Church began in 1964 as St. William Mission with about 90 families and had grown to more than 2,000 families by 2021, according to the Diocese of Palm Beach.

The diocesan article, published in January 2021 as the parish prepared for its silver jubilee, credits a greeters ministry of more than 30 volunteers and a newcomers ministry with drawing people in (Diocese of Palm Beach). The parish is named for Saint Sebastian, whom Sebastian Daily describes as a Christian martyr of the Diocletianic persecution, and it marks his feast each January. In 2022 Sebastian Daily reported an international feast and dance on January 15 at the church at 13075 US Hwy 1, with dishes from Italy, Greece, Mexico, Ireland, Poland and France prepared by parish groups including the Knights of Columbus and the Loyal Order of Hibernians, and tickets at $25 (Sebastian Daily, 2022).

In August 2026 the parish added a school. Sebastian Daily reported that St. Sebastian Academy, at 10860 US Hwy 1, opened with Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 classes, including a five-day morning program for four-year-olds covered by Florida's Voluntary Prekindergarten voucher, and quoted the Bishop of Palm Beach that the diocese was planting new roots in the parish after more than 20 years (Sebastian Daily, 2026).

Sebastian has St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church at 901 Clearmont Street and Sebastian United Methodist Church at 1029 Main St., the two mainline Protestant congregations confirmed for this page.

The Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida lists St. Elizabeth's with Sunday services at 8 and 10 a.m., weekday office hours in the morning, and places it in the diocese's Southeast deanery in Indian River County (Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida). Sebastian United Methodist Church lists Sunday worship at 10 a.m., in person and streamed on YouTube, a grieving support group that meets Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. in its Fellowship Hall, and a SUMC Community Market among its ministries (Sebastian United Methodist Church).

The Methodist congregation also runs programs for children. Sebastian Daily reported that in June 2022 the church held a week-long summer music camp for ages 5 to 9, from June 20 to 26, ending with a Bible-based musical presented at Sunday worship, with scholarships offered in cases of financial hardship (Sebastian Daily, 2022).

Coastal Church, now at 4720 86th St, started in a Fellsmere living room in late 2005 and launched publicly in Sebastian on April 16, 2006, according to Vero News.

For its first years the congregation had no building. Vero News reported in April 2011 that Coastal Community Church met at 10 a.m. Sundays in the auditorium of Sebastian River Middle School, that it had grown from about 15 people to over 120 in five years, and that the Sebastian mayor addressed its fifth-anniversary service. The church listed community work such as gasoline discount events, block parties, Christmas Eve in the Park and building wheelchair ramps (Vero News, 2011). Today the church lists two Sunday services, at 9:00 and 10:30 a.m., with an online service at 10:30, and Coastal Kids and Coastal Students programs (Coastal Church).

Sebastian Church of God, at 281 Delaware Ave, lists Sunday worship at 10:30 a.m. and a Wednesday service at 6:30 p.m. (Sebastian Church of God). Its building on Delaware Avenue also has a civic role on election days.

Two Sebastian congregations host county voting: Sebastian Church of God is the polling place for Precinct 7, and Sebastian Christian Church on Day Drive serves Precincts 10 and 11.

The Indian River County Supervisor of Elections precinct directory lists Sebastian Church of God at 281 Delaware Ave for Precinct 7 and Sebastian Christian Church at 190 Day Dr for both Precinct 10 and Precinct 11. The other Sebastian precincts in the directory vote at public or fraternal buildings: the North County Public Library at 1001 Sebastian Blvd, the Sebastian Community Center at 1805 N Central Ave and the Sebastian Elks Lodge on Fleming Street (Indian River County Supervisor of Elections). In the precinct list, these two congregations are the only houses of worship among the Sebastian polling places; in Fellsmere, Fellsmere Community Bible Church serves Precincts 2 and 3.

The oldest congregation near Sebastian with a state historical marker is Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Wabasso, whose first sanctuary was built in 1916.

The Florida Department of State marker at 6425 85th Street, placed in 2016, records that the congregation began as Beulah African Methodist Episcopal Church, the first Wabasso house of worship tied to a national denomination. Its members arrived in the early 1900s to work in agriculture, lumber, turpentine and construction, and three of them gave the land for a church and a school. The congregation's teaching drew support from the Julius Rosenwald Fund, which helped build Douglas Elementary School on the tract in 1927. The church took the Allen Chapel name in 1943, and the present sanctuary, dedicated in 1957, is the third on the site (Florida Department of State).

Within Sebastian itself, the Catholic parish's 1964 mission start is the earliest founding date confirmed for this page; founding dates for the Episcopal, Methodist and other city congregations were not found in official or news sources and are not given here.
