Sand Fleas (Mole Crabs) — Sebastian, Florida

The mole crab of the swash line, and the pompano, sheepshead and whiting it catches at Sebastian Inlet from December to May.

Short answer: Sand fleas, the mole crab Emerita talpoida, live in the swash zone of sandy beaches, where FWC says they burrow tail first and filter feed, including along the 3 miles of Atlantic beach at Sebastian Inlet State Park. Sebastian Inlet District reports name them as bait for pompano above all, plus whiting, black drum, sheepshead and croakers, most often from December through May.

Where do sand fleas live on Sebastian-area beaches?

Sand fleas live in the swash zone of the sandy beaches around Sebastian Inlet, the strip where waves run up and drain back, burrowing tail first into the sand as FWC describes the mole crab.

The FWC mole crab profile lists the animal as Emerita talpoida, known as the sand flea or sand crab, and gives its habitat as sandy beaches in the swash region of the intertidal zone. It is a small, oval, light brownish-gray crab up to 2 inches long, with a short triangular tail used for digging and two feathery antennae under the eyes that it uses to filter feed on plankton and detritus as the water passes over the Sebastian Inlet beaches.

Sebastian Inlet State Park offers plenty of that habitat. Florida State Parks says the park has 3 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, split by the inlet between the Brevard County side and the Indian River County side, and two jetties extending into the Atlantic where impressive catches are often made.

The district's reports describe the fleas from the angler's end, not the digger's. Across the dated reports in the Sebastian Inlet District report index, from January 2025 to September 2026, sand fleas are named in about forty weekly reports as bait, but none of them says where anglers gather the crabs. The FWC habitat description, the swash line of the beach, is the public guidance on where they live.

What fish eat sand fleas at Sebastian Inlet?

At Sebastian Inlet, sand fleas catch pompano above all, along with whiting, black drum, sheepshead and croakers, in the surf and at the jetty tips, according to Sebastian Inlet District reports.

Pompano is the headline. The March 30, 2026 report said the pompano bite at the Sebastian Inlet tip between Monday and Wednesday on goofy jigs and live sandfleas was really good, with several limits caught and most fish 14 to 16 inches. The April 27, 2026 report saw a couple of big pompano caught on live sandfleas from the beachside of the jetty.

Sheepshead take them in the rocks. The March 10, 2025 report said the sheepshead bite under the Sebastian Inlet bridge, on the legal side of the fence, was pretty good, with many fish of two to three pounds caught on live sandfleas around the pilings and rocks.

Even a permit has fallen to them. In the October 27, 2025 report, anglers fishing the bottom at Sebastian Inlet with sand fleas and shrimp caught a few nice pompano, small black drum and at least one nice keeper permit.

When are sand fleas used most at Sebastian Inlet?

Sand fleas show up in Sebastian Inlet District reports in every season, but they dominate from December through May, the months when pompano and sheepshead carry the fishing at the inlet.

Winter is flea season. The December 15, 2025 report said cut baits like shrimp and live sandfleas were the baits of choice for everything at Sebastian Inlet, even the bluefish. In the January 12, 2026 report, pompano were hitting at the northernmost parking lot area of the park on the north side, along with whiting and small black drum, on live and dead shrimp and live sand fleas, because the water was much cleaner there.

The south side gets its turn. The February 17, 2026 report said the south side surf at Sebastian Inlet had produced some decent pompano on live sandfleas the Monday before, while the January 13, 2025 report had sheepshead on live sandfleas all along the shoreline from the jetty to the T-dock on the incoming tide.

Spring keeps them working. The May 4, 2026 report said small and keeper pompano were caught on live sandfleas on the ocean side of the Sebastian Inlet jetty, along with whiting.

Summer slows down. The June 16, 2025 report said only a very few pompano and whiting were reported just south of the Sebastian Inlet south jetty on cut shrimp and live sandfleas, with the surf churned up by southeast winds and seaweed. By the July 14, 2025 report, the bait anglers using shrimp and sandfleas in the Sebastian Inlet surf were catching mostly whiting, croakers and black drum in the high tide phases.

Fall brings the fleas back into play. The September 8, 2025 report said whiting were back on the menu for anglers fishing fleas or shrimp at Sebastian Inlet, along with the first few pompano, and the November 24, 2025 report had the north side surf around the jetty producing quite a few nice whiting, black drum, sheepshead, pompano and decent bluefish on cut dead shrimp and live sand fleas.

What rules apply to taking sand fleas near Sebastian?

Taking sand fleas near Sebastian requires a Florida saltwater fishing license, because FWC's license covers crabs and other saltwater organisms, but the mole crab itself is listed by FWC as unregulated.

The FWC license page says a saltwater fishing license is required to take or attempt to take saltwater fish, crabs, clams, marine plants or other saltwater organisms, with exceptions for non-living seashells and lionfish taken with certain gear. Mole crabs gathered on the beaches at Sebastian Inlet State Park for bait fall within that wording.

Beyond the license, there is no species limit. The FWC mole crab profile lists recreational regulations as unregulated, and it notes the crabs have a short lifespan of two to three years. Florida State Parks adds that information on fishing regulations is available at both entrance stations of Sebastian Inlet State Park.
