When are the Barefoot Bay pools open?

Pool #1 at Barefoot Bay is open 9am to 10pm year round, while Pool #2 and Pool #3 change hours by season and in October close at 7pm and 6pm (BBRD Pool Hours and Class Times).

The Barefoot Bay Community Pools page shows a single set of hours, Pool #1 9am to 10pm, Pool #2 9am to 8pm and Pool 3 9am to 7pm, which matches the summer column of the season chart (BBRD Community Pools). The district rules say normal hours are as posted, so the hours posted at the pools govern on a given day (BBRD Swimming Pool Rules).

The Barefoot Bay Recreation District lists the pools at 895 Falcon Drive, Sebastian, FL 32976, with the contact phone 772-664-2063 (BBRD Community Pools). Pool #1 is the one tied to the Lounge: the district sells an evening guest pass for the Lounge and Pool 1 after 5pm (BBRD FY27 Fees).

What classes and Kid Swim times run at the Barefoot Bay pools?

Most Barefoot Bay pool classes run in the morning at Pool #1 and Pool #3, with Aqua Zumba on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at Pool #3 and Kid Swim on Saturday afternoons at Pool #2 (BBRD Pool Hours and Class Times).

Children in Barefoot Bay can hold a Kids' Event Badge, which lets the holder take part in District events approved by the District Manager. The BBRD Policy Manual makes the badge free, valid for one year and renewable until age 18, for children who live in the district whose parents or guardians do not hold a social membership or renter's badge; the child and parent register with Resident Relations staff in the Administration Building (BBRD Policy Manual, page 37).

Adult supervision rules still apply during Barefoot Bay Kid Swim. No more than two parents or guardians per child may be in the pool area during Kids' Swim events without approval from the District Manager (BBRD Policy Manual), and children under 12 must be with a parent, guardian or family member over 18 years old (BBRD Policy Manual, page 31).

Who can swim at Barefoot Bay, and what do guest passes cost?

The Barefoot Bay pools are for badge holders and their guests, and a resident guest pass costs $5.00 a day under the FY27 fee schedule effective October 1, 2026 (BBRD FY27 Fees).

Barefoot Bay pool guest passes and badges, FY27 (effective 10/1/2026 to 9/30/2027)

Child guest pass, 1 day (ages 5 to 11)$4.00
Resident guest pass, 7 days, bought at Resident Relations$10.00

Evening guest pass, Lounge and Pool 1 with badgeholder, after 5pm$3.00

Non-resident pass, per person per day$36.00
Kids' Event Badge (under 18)Free
Replacement badge, including Kids Swim badges$23.00

Buying a week pass at Resident Relations instead of at a Barefoot Bay pool saves $17.00 ($27.00 minus $10.00). The fee schedule says fees are doubled when no badge is present, and the manual requires a valid badge holder to be present when guest passes are bought (BBRD Policy Manual, page 37; BBRD FY27 Fees).

The Barefoot Bay manual exempts all active military and children under 5 from guest passes, makes each pass good for one person and non-transferable, and credits a one-day pass toward a week pass bought on the first business day after a weekend purchase at a pool (BBRD Policy Manual, page 37).

Proper ID is required to enter the Barefoot Bay pool areas, and the Pool Host may check bags or coolers for prohibited items before letting anyone in (BBRD Policy Manual, page 30).

What are the main Barefoot Bay pool rules?

There is no lifeguard on duty at any Barefoot Bay district pool, so swimming is at one's own risk, and children under 6 need immediate and constant supervision by an adult over 18 (BBRD Swimming Pool Rules).

Food and drink stay at least 4 feet from the water at Barefoot Bay. The posted rules bar all food and drink within that distance, while the Policy Manual adopted September 22, 2026 adds one exception, commercially bottled water in plastic (BBRD Policy Manual, page 31; adoption page).

Glass and outside alcohol are out at every Barefoot Bay pool. The rules cite Florida law against glass in pool areas, allow alcohol only when bought from the District, bar containers carrying alcohol, and let staff turn away people with suspicious looking containers inside the fenced areas at Pools #1, #2 and #3, including the Lounge, Lakeside, picnic and pavilion areas (BBRD Swimming Pool Rules).

The Barefoot Bay hygiene rules require a shower before entering, swim diapers for infants and anyone with incontinence, and no swimming with open sores or contagious disease. Swimsuits or authorized swim wear are the only allowed apparel; anyone whose clothing bleeds dye and forces a pool closure is billed for treating the water (BBRD Swimming Pool Rules). The separate Barefoot Bay Pool Policy still says colorfast shirts in good condition are permitted (Barefoot Bay Pool Policy, page 2).

Behavior rules at Barefoot Bay ban diving, running, jumping, rough play and profanity, allow only service animals, and require a cover-up and shoes inside the facilities. Restrooms are in the dressing rooms at Pool #2 and Pool #3 and in the Lounge hallway, and breaking the rules can cost a resident social membership privileges or a Kids' Swim badge (BBRD Swimming Pool Rules).

What can go in the water at Barefoot Bay?

Only items on the Barefoot Bay district's approved list may go in the pools, a list kept at each pool and posted online (BBRD List of Items Allowed in the Pool).

The approved Barefoot Bay list covers exercise gear (foam dumb bells, foam exercise belts and resistance bands), swim aids (goggles, snorkel, foot flippers, swimmies and baby or infant floats), dive sticks, a neckdoodle, and water shoes, though not crocs or flip flops (BBRD approved items).

Noodles are allowed at Barefoot Bay only unaltered and undamaged, foam or inflatable, with no tape, wire or zip-tie connectors. Net sling chairs may hang on regular noodles of 52-inch length, 2-1/2-inch diameter and a 1-inch hollow core, and bath toys such as boats and rubber ducks must have no removable parts (BBRD approved items).

What happens at the Barefoot Bay pools when lightning hits?

In lightning or threatening weather, Barefoot Bay swimmers must leave the pool area when the Pool Host says so and stay out until the host clears them (BBRD Swimming Pool Rules).

The Barefoot Bay rule names the areas to clear: the gated area at Pool #2 and Pool #3 and the lower deck at Pool #1 (BBRD Swimming Pool Rules). The separate Barefoot Bay Pool Policy carries the same wording (Barefoot Bay Pool Policy, page 2).

The Barefoot Bay rule leaves the all-clear to the Pool Host and sets no fixed waiting time. The National Weather Service office in Melbourne, which forecasts for east central Florida, calls lightning Florida's number one weather related killer and recommends staying under cover until 30 minutes after the final clap of thunder (NWS Melbourne lightning safety).

The Pool Host role is central to that rule at Barefoot Bay. The district budget says Pool Hosts staff the pools during operating hours to check badges and ensure safety, and that pool technicians are licensed through the National Swimming Pool Foundation (BBRD FY27 Adopted Budget, page 43).

Who inspects and pays for the Barefoot Bay pools?

The Barefoot Bay pools are public pools under Florida law, which counts pools serving subdivisions and mobile home parks, and they need a Department of Health operating permit renewed every year (Section 514.011, Florida Statutes; Section 514.031).

District facilities at Barefoot Bay come with a paid social membership, a $1,700.00 fee plus tax for owners and residents under the FY27 fee schedule (BBRD FY27 Fees), and the statute adds a posting rule for pools entered by membership for a fee: the owner or operator must post the most recent pool inspection report in a prominent location (Section 514.031, Florida Statutes).

For the Barefoot Bay pools, those permits and inspections come from the Environmental Public Health section of the Florida Department of Health in Brevard County, which enforces the sanitation and safety standards in Chapter 64E-9, Florida Administrative Code; the department posts inspection results for public pools by county online (Florida Department of Health).

The Barefoot Bay Recreation District budgets $739,809 for Pools in FY27, up from $576,734 in FY24 actual spending (BBRD FY27 Adopted Budget, page 4). Part-time wages for pool staff are the largest line at $323,537, ahead of full-time salaries at $113,412, and the Pools budget also sets $48,100 for chlorine and $49,000 for propane (BBRD FY27 Adopted Budget, page 53).

Pool #3 gets the big Barefoot Bay capital work in FY27: $80,000 for resurfacing and $38,000 for heater replacement (BBRD FY27 Adopted Budget, page 68). A shade structure at Pool #2 was finished in July 2026 (BBRD District Information). Heated water is an old promise here: the district history lists a heated pool among the early amenities, alongside the Polynesian-style clubhouse that opened in June 1971 (About Barefoot Bay).

Non-residents can rent the Pool #1 Pavilion at Barefoot Bay for $196.00 per hour with a 2-hour minimum (BBRD FY27 Fees; BBRD Policy Manual, page 38).
