Where are the Indian River County Tax Collector offices?
The Indian River County Tax Collector serves the public from four offices: the Main Office at 1800 27th Street in Vero Beach, the West Office on 82nd Avenue, the Oceanside Office on Cardinal Drive and the Sebastian Office at Sebastian Corners (Tax Collector).
| Office | Address | Drive-thru |
|---|---|---|
| Main Office (County Administration Complex) | 1800 27th Street, Building B, Vero Beach, FL 32960 | Yes |
| West Office (Vero West Commercial Center) | 1860 82nd Avenue, Suite 102, Vero Beach, FL 32966 | Yes |
| Oceanside Office (Oceanside County Complex) | 3003 Cardinal Drive, Suite C, Vero Beach, FL 32963 | Not listed |
| Sebastian Office (Sebastian Corners) | 1921 U.S. Highway 1, Sebastian, FL 32958 | Not listed |
Three of the four sit in Vero Beach ZIP codes: 32960 for the Main Office beside the county government on 27th Street, 32966 for the West Office in the Vero West Commercial Center, and 32963 for the Oceanside Office in the Oceanside County Complex (Office Locations and Contact Information). The Sebastian Office, ZIP 32958, is the only one with a Sebastian address. The office lists its mailing address as PO Box 1509, Vero Beach, FL 32961, and its main phone as (772) 226-1338 (Indian River County Tax Collector).
Carole Jean Jordan is the Tax Collector, and the office website identifies her as serving Indian River County (irctax.com). The office describes itself as an agent for local government agencies for the billing and collection of revenue, with no control over assessed values or the amount of tax due (About Real Estate Property Tax). Its site lists Vero Beach, Sebastian, Indian River Shores, Orchid and Fellsmere as the county's municipalities.
When are the offices open?
The Indian River County Tax Collector is open 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 8:40 AM to 5:00 PM Wednesday, with all locations closed 12 to 1 PM (office hours).
The midday closure applies to all four locations, Sebastian Corners included. The exception is the drive-thru: the Main Office on 27th Street and the West Office on 82nd Avenue keep their drive-thru lanes open through lunch for registration renewals and replacements, parking placards and property tax payments (Tax Collector FAQ). The Main Office listing adds that drive-thru services are available during all business hours, including 12 to 1 PM (Locations).
The Wednesday start of 8:40 AM is the only weekday that differs, and it holds at the Oceanside and Sebastian branches as well as the two Vero Beach mainland offices. The Tax Collector lists no Saturday hours for any Indian River County location.
Is an appointment required?
Property tax payments are the only in-person Tax Collector service in Indian River County that does not need an appointment; all other in-person services require one, and appointments can be scheduled online (appointment FAQ).
Two limits sit on top of the appointment rule. Computer and road test appointments are currently available only to Indian River County residents, so a driver living across the line in Brevard or St. Lucie County cannot test at the Sebastian or Vero Beach offices (Tax Collector). Visitors from other counties are otherwise welcome: the Tax Collector states that it serves customers from all counties, by appointment only, regardless of county of residence (out-of-county customers).
Property taxes stay local. The same FAQ states that property taxes must be paid in the county where the property is located, and that the Indian River County office cannot accept payments for property taxes owed in other counties (Tax Collector FAQ). An owner with land in a second county therefore pays that bill to that county.
Which services does each office offer?
Motorist services, property tax, local business tax, and hunting and fishing appear on every office's service list; the differences are that the Oceanside Office notes driver license service is unavailable there, and TSA PreCheck appears on the West Office list alone (Oceanside Office, West Office).
| Service | Main | West | Sebastian | Oceanside |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Motorist services | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Driver license | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Property tax | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Local business tax | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Hunting and fishing | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Concealed weapons | Yes | Yes | Yes | Not listed |
| Birth certificates | Yes | Yes | Yes | Not listed |
| TSA PreCheck | Not listed | Yes | Not listed | Not listed |
The table follows each office's own service list. Seven services appear on the Sebastian Office list at Sebastian Corners: motorist services, driver license, property tax, local business tax, hunting and fishing, concealed weapons and birth certificates (Sebastian Office). The Main Office in the County Administration Complex lists the same seven (Main Office). The West Office in the Vero West Commercial Center adds TSA PreCheck as an eighth (West Office).
The Oceanside Office in the Oceanside County Complex has the shortest list: motorist services, property tax, local business tax and hunting and fishing, plus a note that driver license is not available at this location (Oceanside Office). Driver license customers book the Main, West or Sebastian office instead.
Business tax and property tax at the Tax Collector
Beyond vehicles and licenses, the Indian River County Tax Collector mails and collects property tax bills countywide and sells the $40.00 Local Business Tax receipt to businesses in unincorporated areas only (Local Business Tax).
The business tax is where city limits matter. The Tax Collector collects it only from businesses located in unincorporated Indian River County, at $40.00 a year for all businesses, on a tax year running October 1 to September 30, prorated for new businesses that start between January and September (Local Business Tax Receipt Overview). Businesses inside a city or town are sent to that government instead.
| Business location | Contact |
|---|---|
| Unincorporated county | Tax Collector offices, $40.00 a year |
| City of Sebastian | (772) 589-5330 |
| City of Vero Beach | (772) 978-4550 |
| City of Fellsmere | (772) 646-6314 |
| Town of Indian River Shores | (772) 231-4453 |
| Town of Orchid | (772) 581-2770 |
A home-based business in the unincorporated county also needs a Home Occupation Permit from Code Enforcement at 1801 27th Street, Building A, Vero Beach, phone (772) 226-1249; those applications cannot be processed online (Tax Collector).
Bills follow the certified tax roll, which ties the Tax Collector to the Property Appraiser. The Tax Collector states that a mailing address change must be made with the Property Appraiser, whose office answers at (772) 226-1469, and that a real estate bill received for a parcel no longer owned should be forwarded to the new owner or returned (Tax Collector). Owners whose taxes are at least $100.00 may choose to pay the following year in installments.
Property tax bills come from the same office for every parcel, whether in Sebastian, Fellsmere or the unincorporated county. The Tax Collector mails bills by November 1st, allows discounts of 4% in November, 3% in December, 2% in January and 1% in February, and treats gross taxes as due in March, with the discount set by the postmark (About Real Estate Property Tax). Owners missing a bill by November 9th are told to notify the office, and the tax department answers at (772) 226-1343.
