Where are vehicles titled and registered in Indian River County?
Every title and tag transaction in Indian River County runs through the Tax Collector, whose four offices in Vero Beach, on the barrier island and at Sebastian Corners all list motorist services.
Unlike driver licenses, plates and titles are handled at all four branches. The Main Office is in the County Administration Complex, 1800 27th Street, Building B (Main Office); the West Office is at Vero West Commercial Center, 1860 82nd Avenue, Suite 102 (West Office); the Oceanside Office is at the Oceanside County Complex, 3003 Cardinal Drive, Suite C (Oceanside Office); and the Sebastian Office is at Sebastian Corners, 1921 U.S. Highway 1 (Sebastian Office).
A counter visit needs a booking. The Tax Collector exempts only property tax payments from its appointment rule (appointment rule). Doors open 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 8:40 AM on Wednesday, with a noon to 1 PM closure at every branch; the 27th Street and 82nd Avenue drive-thrus keep running through lunch for registration renewals and replacements, parking placards and tax payments (office hours). For a simple plate renewal, those drive-thru lanes in Vero Beach are an alternative to the indoor counters.
What does it take to put a car on Florida plates in Indian River County?
An Indian River County Tax Collector office issues a first Florida title and registration when the owner brings the title, proof of Florida insurance and the vehicle, which must be present for a VIN check, with every owner present.
The Tax Collector checklist adds one more document: if the vehicle has been owned for less than 6 months, proof that sales tax was paid (Tax Collector registration checklist). The VIN must be physically verified, which is why the car itself has to be brought to a Tax Collector office.
Newcomers usually meet the $225 initial registration fee. The Tax Collector explains that it applies when the owner has no Florida plate, and no record of one previously registered in the owner's name, that can move to the newly acquired vehicle (Tag Credit article). Florida Statutes s. 320.072 imposes the $225 on the initial application for registration and excludes renewals (s. 320.072). Add the $28.00 original plate fee from the FLHSMV schedule (FLHSMV fees) and an $85.25 used-vehicle title, and a first visit for an out-of-state used car in Indian River County starts at $338.25 (225 + 28 + 85.25) before the annual registration tax and any sales tax.
A tag credit softens that hit for repeat owners. When a plate and registration are surrendered, a customer who originally paid the initial fee receives a credit that waives it on a later vehicle; the credit can be used only once and only for another registration in the same owner's name (Indian River County Tax Collector, Tag Credit article).
What are the title fees at the Indian River County Tax Collector?
As of October 12, 2026, an electronic Florida title at the Indian River County Tax Collector costs $77.25 for a new vehicle, $85.25 for a used one and $75.25 for a transfer or duplicate.
| Title transaction | Fee |
|---|---|
| Original title, new vehicle | $77.25 |
| Original title, used vehicle | $85.25 |
| Transfer or duplicate | $75.25 |
| Lien only, no ownership change | $74.25 |
| Fast title (added) | $10.00 |
| For-hire vehicle title | $56.25 |
| Late title fee | $20.00 |
| Re-inspection fee | $20.00 |
All of those amounts assume an electronic title kept on the state record. The Tax Collector adds $2.50 for service and handling when a paper title is printed, and an additional $2 lien recording fee may apply when a lender is listed (Title Fees). A fast title is issued while the customer is at the Tax Collector's office, for an additional $10.00 (Fast Titles).
How much is the yearly registration in Indian River County?
The base yearly registration tax at the Indian River County Tax Collector runs from $14.50 for a car under 2,500 pounds to $32.50 for one of 3,500 pounds or more, before other statutory fees.
| Vehicle | Base tax |
|---|---|
| Automobile, up to 2,499 pounds | $14.50 |
| Automobile, 2,500 to 3,499 pounds | $22.50 |
| Automobile, 3,500 pounds or more | $32.50 |
| Motorcycle | $10.00 |
| Private trailer under 500 pounds | $6.75 |
| Recreational vehicle over 4,500 pounds | $47.50 |
The Tax Collector notes that the chart shows the base vehicle tax only and that other statutory fees apply, with the class code set by weight, body type, vehicle type and use (Registration Fees). Registrations are valid until midnight on the registrant's birthday, and a delinquent fee starts on the eleventh calendar day of the month after the renewal was due, scaled from $5.00 on a license tax up to $25.00 to $250.00 on one above $600.00.
Is sales tax collected when a title changes hands in Indian River County?
Yes: the Indian River County Tax Collector collects Florida's 6 percent sales tax on a straight sale at title transfer, and local discretionary surtax may also apply based on the buyer's county of residence.
A straight sale is one with no trade-in of a vehicle, mobile home or vessel, and the tax is figured on the total sales price (Sales Tax Requirements). Common exemptions listed by the Vero Beach office include qualified transfers between certain family members, eligible gifts, some inherited vehicles and adding an owner to a title when the current owner stays on it, with supporting documents required. Buyers who paid legally imposed sales tax to another state may receive credit for it and may be required to pay the difference if that tax was less than the Florida amount.
The same rule reaches beyond cars. The Tax Collector states that Florida law requires sales tax on the sales price of a motor vehicle, mobile home or vessel, so a boat bought at a Sebastian marina or a used mobile home in a Vero Beach park is taxed when it is titled unless the transaction is exempt (Sales Tax Requirements). Anyone unsure whether an exemption fits is asked to contact the office before the visit, which saves a second trip to 27th Street or Sebastian Corners.
How are boats and mobile homes titled in Indian River County?
Boats and mobile homes go through the same Indian River County Tax Collector counters as cars, with a 30-day deadline for vessels and a December 31 renewal date for mobile home registrations.
A buyer of a new or used vessel has 30 days to title and register it at a tax collector office, and a vessel title costs $5.25 electronic, $7.75 paper or $11 fast, on top of registration and sales tax; a Class 1 boat of 16 to under 26 feet carries a $28.75 registration fee, before a $2.25 service fee and a $.50 fee that the table excludes (Titling and Registering Vessels). Boaters on the Indian River Lagoon and the St. Sebastian River can file at the Sebastian Corners office as well as in Vero Beach.
Mobile homes are titled by the side: a single-wide gets 1 title, a double-wide 2 and a triple-wide 3, and a home bought from a Florida licensed dealer is titled and registered by that dealer rather than at the Tax Collector (Mobile Home Titles). Registrations renew every year and expire December 31 unless the Indian River County Property Appraiser classifies the home as real property, and the fee rises with length from $26.60 through 35 feet to $86.60 at 66 feet and up (Mobile Home Registrations). The Tax Collector mails courtesy renewal notices 4 weeks ahead, although state law does not require them.
How are disabled parking permits issued in Indian River County?
Disabled person parking permits are issued at any Indian River County Tax Collector office without an appointment, or online, on state Form HSMV 83039 signed by a certifying professional within the last 12 months.
A permanent permit needs the completed form and a valid Florida driver license or ID card; a temporary permit adds a $15 fee and lasts for the period the certifier sets, up to six months (Disabled Parking Permit). Physicians, chiropractors, optometrists for legal blindness, advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants may certify, and they must list their license number and state. Owners in Sebastian, Fellsmere or Vero Beach can also handle parking placards at the Main or West drive-thru, which stays open over lunch for them (office hours).

Frequently asked questions
Can a car be registered at the Oceanside Office on Cardinal Drive?
Yes. The Oceanside Office lists motorist services, so titles and plates are handled there as well as at the Main and West offices in Vero Beach and the Sebastian Office. Driver licenses are not available on Cardinal Drive.
Who pays the $225 initial registration fee in Indian River County?
An owner with no Florida plate, and no record of one in the owner's name to transfer, pays it when first registering a vehicle at the Tax Collector. A tag credit from a surrendered plate waives it once. Renewals never carry it.
When does a vehicle registration expire in Indian River County?
At midnight on the registrant's birthday, according to the Tax Collector. A delinquent fee of $5.00 to $250.00, scaled to the license tax, applies from the eleventh day of the following month.
Does the county Tax Collector title a mobile home bought from a dealer?
No. When a mobile home is bought from a Florida licensed dealer, the dealer must submit the title and registration. Other mobile home titles are filed at a Tax Collector office, with one title issued for each side of the home.
Is an appointment needed for a disabled parking placard?
No. The Indian River County Tax Collector says an appointment is not required to apply for a disabled parking placard at any office, and applications can also be filed online with Form HSMV 83039.
