Their mean travel time of 31.1 minutes is more than seven minutes longer than the county mean and about three minutes longer than the Florida mean of 28.0 minutes. The county's own economic development office quotes a similar county figure: Indian River County Economic Development lists a 23.7-minute average commute for Indian River County.

The long tail is what sets Sebastian apart. Among the 9,173 Sebastian workers who leave home for work, 12.2 percent travel 60 minutes or more each way, nearly double the county rate of 6.6 percent, and another 9.1 percent travel 45 to 59 minutes. At the other end, 23.7 percent reach work in under 15 minutes, which reflects the share who work inside Sebastian itself.

Where do Sebastian residents work?

About 27 percent of employed Sebastian residents work inside the city, about 78 percent work somewhere in Indian River County and about one in five work in another Florida county.

The ACS place-of-work split for Sebastian in 2020-2024 is 27.2 percent working in the City of Sebastian, 77.7 percent working in Indian River County (including Sebastian), 19.9 percent working in a different Florida county and 2.3 percent working outside Florida. The out-of-county share is higher than the county's 15.1 percent and fits a city at the north end of Indian River County, where the county line is closer than the south county job centers. The ACS release does not name the destination counties for the 19.9 percent, so this page does not assign them to a specific county.

Inside the city, two employers anchor local jobs. The City of Sebastian cites an August 2021 Florida Department of Transportation report showing Sebastian Municipal Airport with total employment of 281 and a total payroll of $16.1 million. Indian River County Economic Development lists Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital, a 178-bed facility, with 700 to 800 employees. Larger employers sit to the south in Vero Beach: the same source lists Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital at 2,600 employees, and its manufacturing page lists Piper Aircraft at 1,500 or more, the largest company in that manufacturing list.

How do Sebastian workers get to work?

Nearly four in five Sebastian workers drive alone, and fewer than 1 in 100 ride the bus, according to ACS 2020-2024 estimates.

The ACS mode split for Sebastian is 78.8 percent driving alone, 9.4 percent carpooling (mostly two-person carpools, at 7.9 percent), 9.3 percent working from home, 1.7 percent by taxi, ride-hailing, motorcycle or other means, 0.4 percent walking, 0.3 percent by public transportation and 0.2 percent by bicycle. Only 0.4 percent of Sebastian workers live in a household with no vehicle available. The work-from-home share is lower than the county's 13.6 percent and Florida's 15.7 percent, a sign that Sebastian's workforce is weighted toward jobs done on site.

The car commute runs on three roads. US 1 carries traffic south toward Vero Beach and north toward Brevard County, County Road 512 (Sebastian Boulevard, becoming Fellsmere Road west of town) connects the city to I-95, and I-95 itself carries the longest trips. Indian River County places its North County Aquatic Center off CR 512 approximately 2 miles east of I-95, a measure of how close the interstate interchange sits to the western Sebastian Highlands.

Bus service exists but carries few Sebastian commuters. GoLine runs 14 fixed routes in Indian River County. Route 5 is the Sebastian loop, leaving Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital every hour from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and running along US 1, Main Street and Barber Street to CR 512 and Roseland Road and the North County Hub. Route 9 links the North County Hub to Sebastian River High School and on to the Indian River Mall in Vero Beach, the connection for Sebastian riders headed to jobs in the south county. In August 2024 Sebastian Daily reported that GoLine's weekday hours had been extended to 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and that Saturday service would run 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

When do Sebastian commuters leave home?

Most Sebastian commuters leave home between 6:30 and 8:00 a.m., and nearly half are on the road before 7:30 a.m., according to ACS 2020-2024 estimates.

The ACS departure-time table for Sebastian shows 16.6 percent leaving between 6:30 and 6:59 a.m., 18.6 percent between 7:00 and 7:29 a.m. and 14.5 percent between 7:30 and 7:59 a.m., so the 6:30 to 8:00 window holds 49.7 percent of commuters. Early starts are common too: 7.0 percent leave between 6:00 and 6:29 a.m., 4.6 percent between 5:30 and 5:59 a.m., 2.7 percent between 5:00 and 5:29 a.m. and 1.1 percent before 5:00 a.m. Only 17.5 percent leave at 9:00 a.m. or later, compared with 24.4 percent countywide.

The early profile lines up with the long trips. The 6:30 to 6:59 a.m. slot is a larger share in Sebastian (16.6 percent) than in the county as a whole (10.8 percent).

How are Sebastian commuting figures measured?

Sebastian commuting figures come from American Community Survey questions on travel time, departure time, mode and place of work, averaged over 2020 to 2024.

The Census Bureau's commuting topic page lists what its surveys ask: primary means of transportation to work, days worked from home, travel time to work, time of departure, and the geographic location of the place of work, among other items. For a city of Sebastian's size the ACS pools five years of responses, so the 2020-2024 figures describe an average across years that include the pandemic shift to remote work; each figure carries a margin of error, and small categories such as bicycling (0.2 percent of Sebastian workers) are especially uncertain.

The regional labor market frames the numbers. Indian River County Economic Development says there are 640,000 workers within an hour's drive of the county, which works in both directions: employers in Sebastian and Vero Beach draw from that pool, and Sebastian residents with 60-minute commutes are part of the flow outward.
