Sebastian Inlet Bridge — Sebastian, Florida

The 1,548-foot James H. Pruitt Memorial Bridge has carried A1A over Sebastian Inlet since 1964; FDOT began building its replacement on June 1, 2026.

Short answer: The Sebastian Inlet Bridge, formally the James H. Pruitt Memorial Bridge, carries State Road A1A across Sebastian Inlet on the Indian River and Brevard County line east of Sebastian. Completed in 1964 and dedicated in 1965, the 1,548-foot concrete span was rated structurally deficient by FDOT in 2018. A taller, wider replacement with shared use paths and fishing decks began construction on June 1, 2026.

What is the Sebastian Inlet Bridge?

The Sebastian Inlet Bridge is the State Road A1A crossing over Sebastian Inlet, the channel that links the Indian River Lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean on the barrier island east of Sebastian. Its formal name is the James H. Pruitt Memorial Bridge. The Florida Department of Transportation identifies it as structure number 880005 in the National Bridge Inventory, a 1,548-foot-long bridge built in 1964 that carries SR A1A over the inlet at the Indian River and Brevard County line.

The bridge sits beside Sebastian Inlet State Park and inside the right of way of the Sebastian Inlet District, the special district that maintains the channel underneath it. FDOT describes Sebastian Inlet as one of five navigable channels connecting the Indian River Lagoon to the Atlantic, with the closest others at Fort Pierce Inlet, 28 miles to the south, and Port Canaveral Inlet, 29 miles to the north. Campgrounds and a boat ramp lie at the southern end of the span, and fishing takes place at the north end.

As of October 2026 the 1964 bridge is still carrying traffic, but its days are numbered. FDOT began building a taller, wider replacement east of the existing span on June 1, 2026, and plans to demolish the old Sebastian Inlet structure once the new one is finished.

How did the bridge come to be built in 1964?

For decades the inlet itself was the obstacle. The Sebastian Inlet District history records attempts to open a cut as early as 1872, a short-lived 1918 opening, the creation of the district on May 23, 1919, an opening at the current location in June 1923, and a 1948 blast with surplus U.S. Navy demolitions after which the inlet has remained open. A permanent channel at Sebastian Inlet made a permanent crossing possible.

The crossing came together through the Florida Legislature. According to the Sebastian Inlet District, State Rep. James H. Pruitt, a former mayor of Eau Gallie who served in the Legislature from 1959 to 1967, introduced a bill moving the Brevard and Indian River county line north to the center of the inlet, so that the south half of the bridge lay in Indian River County and that county would contribute its allocated funding. The district history adds that, in return for helping complete the bridge and pave A1A on the south side, Brevard County ceded almost 3 miles of land south of the inlet to Indian River County. That is why the county line still jogs through the lagoon at Sebastian Inlet.

The bridge was built by Cleary Brothers Construction Company of West Palm Beach and completed in 1964. On February 27, 1965, an estimated 8,000 people gathered for the dedication, with U.S. Air Force jets making low passes and a flotilla of boats in the inlet below, and Pruitt cut the ribbon at noon. The Legislature first dedicated the span to Robert W. Graves in 1965. After Pruitt died in 2002, State Rep. Bob Allen sponsored a bill to rededicate it, and on November 18, 2004 it became the James H. Pruitt Memorial Bridge at a ceremony in Sebastian Inlet State Park.

What are the design details of the 1964 span?

The existing Sebastian Inlet Bridge is a two-lane concrete span. The Sebastian Inlet District gives its total length as 1,548 feet with a main span of 180 feet, and notes that catwalks are built below the bridge while the jetties extend along the inlet to the Atlantic. FDOT lists a vertical clearance of 37 feet, a horizontal clearance of 120 feet and a bridge width of 34 feet 3 inches, with observation and fishing piers under the bridge on both the north and south sides of the inlet.

The structure has been repaired twice. Both FDOT and the Sebastian Inlet District record repairs or retrofits in 1978 and 2003. In 2022 the district completed shoreline armoring on both sides of the inlet channel after Hurricanes Matthew and Dorian, work that included repairs to the catwalk under the State Road A1A bridge west to the T-Dock, a $1.1 million project funded by ad valorem taxes and completed on October 21, 2022.

FDOT considers the 1964 bridge historically notable in its own right. Its project summary describes the Sebastian Inlet span as recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C, engineering, for its high-integrity embodiment of a prestressed concrete bridge in Florida. The bridge is also part of the 233-mile Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway, designated June 13, 2000.

Why is the Sebastian Inlet Bridge being replaced?

Age and salt water caught up with the span. According to FDOT, its District Four evaluated the bridge on November 14, 2018, following Hurricane Florence, and rated it structurally deficient with a sufficiency rating of 51.6 and a health index of 79.8. FDOT bridge policy calls for structurally deficient bridges to be replaced within six years, and bridges with a health index below 85 require repair or replacement. FDOT now describes the 1964 Sebastian Inlet Bridge as in poor condition, structurally deficient, functionally obsolete and scour critical.

The stated purpose of the project is to fix those deficiencies and to close a gap in the bicycle and pedestrian network along A1A. FDOT granted Location and Design Concept Acceptance for the Sebastian Inlet replacement on May 23, 2023, held a public meeting on July 17, 2024, and let the project for construction on December 3, 2025.

The price rose as planning went on. Roads and Bridges reported in July 2024 that the FDOT estimate for the Sebastian Inlet Bridge was $55 million in 2021, $89 million in 2022 and $103.4 million by 2024. The FDOT project page lists an estimated construction cost of $102 million, and Sebastian Daily reported a $101.9 million replacement in June 2026.

What will the new bridge over Sebastian Inlet look like?

The new bridge is being built on an alignment shifted east of the existing span. FDOT lists two 12-foot travel lanes, two 8-foot shoulders and two 12-foot shared use paths, plus two fishing pier and observation walks, one under the bridge from the south shore of Sebastian Inlet and one from the north shore. Vero Beach 32963 reported in May 2026 that the new span will be 1,543 feet 9 inches long, with a clearance of 51 feet from the water at its apex, and that three semicircular lookout areas will extend from each side of the deck.

The two observation decks under the new Sebastian Inlet span will be 232 feet long on the north side and 174 feet long on the south side, open to pedestrians only, with fishing permitted from both, according to the same report. At Sebastian Inlet State Park, FDOT plans crosswalks across SR A1A at the north and south entrances, right-turn lanes at both entrances, and a 780-foot southbound acceleration lane at the south exit.

The contractor is Texas-based Webber LLC, according to Vero Beach 32963. FDOT says construction is phased to avoid a detour or closure, keeping two-way traffic across the inlet at all times. Once the new bridge is complete, the 1964 structure will be demolished and 3,500 tons of rubble will be barged to the Orchid Island Reef complex, a group of eight artificial reefs Indian River County is creating offshore south and east of the inlet.

How does construction affect Sebastian Inlet State Park and A1A?

Work started on schedule. The Town of Melbourne Beach reports that replacement of the bridge over Sebastian Inlet on SR A1A began on June 1, 2026, and that the south section of the Sebastian Inlet State Park North Parking Lot will be partially closed around the clock through spring 2032. FDOT lists the anticipated construction end as fall 2031, while news reports in 2026 cite completion in spring 2032.

Sebastian Daily reported in June 2026 that single-lane closures on A1A at Sebastian Inlet are permitted Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., with flaggers maintaining traffic. Access to the South Parking Lot east of the bridge, and from that lot to the south jetty, is closed during construction, although the south jetty itself stays open to the public and FDOT does not expect to interrupt access to the north jetty pier.

The Sebastian Inlet District shares FDOT news releases as a public courtesy but notes that the bridge replacement is not a district project. The district, chartered in 1919, has maintained the inlet navigation channel beneath the bridge since then and coordinates with FDOT on any marine traffic restrictions in the inlet during construction.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the Sebastian Inlet Bridge named after?

It is the James H. Pruitt Memorial Bridge, named in 2004 for the state representative who helped bring the crossing about. The Legislature had first dedicated it to Robert W. Graves in 1965, according to the Sebastian Inlet District.

Is the Sebastian Inlet Bridge in Indian River County or Brevard County?

Both. FDOT places the bridge on the Indian River and Brevard County line, which was moved to the center of the inlet in the 1960s so Indian River County could help fund the south half of the span.

When will the new Sebastian Inlet Bridge be finished?

Construction began June 1, 2026. FDOT lists an anticipated end in fall 2031, and the Town of Melbourne Beach and local news reports give spring 2032 for completion and the end of park parking closures.

Will A1A close during the Sebastian Inlet Bridge construction?

No full closure is planned. FDOT says the work is phased to keep two-way traffic across the inlet at all times, with temporary single-lane closures on weekdays handled by flaggers.

Can people still fish from the jetties at Sebastian Inlet during construction?

According to Sebastian Daily in June 2026, the south jetty remains open to the public and FDOT does not expect to interrupt access to the north jetty pier, although the South Parking Lot east of the bridge is closed.
