Short answer: Golden Sands Park is Indian River County's Golden Sands Beach Park, a 6.23 acre guarded oceanfront park at 10350 Highway A1A on the barrier island between Sebastian Inlet and Wabasso Beach. Lifeguards are on duty 9:10 a.m. to 4:50 p.m., and the park has 6 pavilions, a playground, restrooms, showers and 128 parking spaces. It is a public access point to the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge sea turtle beaches.

What is Golden Sands Park?

Golden Sands Park, listed by Indian River County Parks, Recreation and Conservation as Golden Sands Beach Park, is a county oceanfront park at 10350 Highway A1A on the barrier island between Sebastian Inlet and Wabasso Beach. The county gives a park size of 6.23 acres, hours of daily 7 a.m. to sunset, and lifeguards on duty from 9:10 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. The mailing address reads Vero Beach, FL 32963, but a December 2022 county survey of beaches listed from north to south placed Golden Sands between Treasure Shores Beach Park and the Town of Orchid on the north Indian River County stretch of A1A.

The park is one of the guarded entrances to the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service states that the refuge provides public access to many beaches within Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge including Golden Sands and Treasure Shores. The Service describes the refuge, established in 1991, as 20.5 miles of beach and shoreline between Melbourne Beach and Wabasso Beach, and as the most significant area for loggerhead sea turtle nesting in the world. Of the three county refuge access parks on the Indian River County end, Golden Sands is the one the county lists as guarded; Treasure Shores and Ambersand are listed without lifeguards.

It is also one of the county's busiest sites. Vero News reported on October 10, 2024 that a survey for the inaugural 10-year Indian River County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Master Plan showed two of the three most frequently used county recreation facilities were on the barrier island: Round Island riverside park and Golden Sands Beach Park.

What facilities does Golden Sands Beach Park have?

Indian River County lists 6 grills, 6 pavilions, 8 picnic tables, a playground, 128 parking spaces, 8 handicap spaces, drinking fountains, restrooms, showers and an ADA crossover at Golden Sands Beach Park. The guarded area covers 573 linear feet of beach during the 9:10 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. guarded hours, and the county publishes a lifeguard tower number, 772-268-5981, alongside the Indian River County beach condition hotline, 772-226-3384. The county states that Golden Sands Park offers ADA beach access.

Two county pages give different parking counts. The park listing gives 128 parking spaces, while the county's Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge page lists Golden Sands Park with 131 parking spaces, together with 6 grills, 6 pavilions and a guarded area. Either way, Golden Sands has far more parking than Treasure Shores, which the same refuge page lists at 74 spaces, or Ambersand Beach Park, which it lists with an unpaved parking area.

Rules at Golden Sands follow the Indian River County park ordinance: no pets, no alcohol, no open fires, no camping, no overnight parking, no trespassing when the park is closed, no equestrian activities and no fireworks, and beachgoers are asked to stay off the dunes west of the open beach. The county lists fishing outside of guarded areas, surfing, scuba diving, sunbathing and picnicking as normal beach activities. Because the park lies in the Archie Carr refuge, the county lists sea turtle nesting season as March 1 to October 31 and directs reports of injured or dead sea turtles to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

How did the 2022 hurricanes affect Golden Sands Beach?

Hurricanes Ian and Nicole in fall 2022 cut into the dunes at Golden Sands. Vero Beach 32963 reported on December 3, 2022 that county staff walking the island beaches observed at Golden Sands Beach Park a 3-foot lowering of the berm, a 6-foot dune retreat and a 7-foot dune escarpment. For comparison, the same survey recorded a 20 to 25 foot dune retreat at Wabasso Beach Park and a 4 to 5 foot retreat at Ambersand Beach Access to the north.

Emergency repairs followed within weeks. Vero News reported on December 19, 2022 that the county asked contractors to adjust Hurricane Ian repair bids to cover added sand needs at Golden Sands Beach Park, Wabasso Beach Park, Turtle Trail, Seagrape and Tracking Station beach parks; six bids ranged from $662,000 to $1.2 million, and staff recommended Guettler Brothers Construction of Fort Pierce. Vero News reported on January 6, 2023 that Golden Sands Beach Access would close starting the following Monday as sand was placed on the dunes and berm ahead of the March 1 nesting season, and on March 6, 2023 Vero Beach 32963 reported the county had concluded work in six areas, including Golden Sand Beach Park.

A larger dune rebuild came the next winter. Vero Beach 32963 reported on November 19, 2023 that a roughly $13 million project would bring in about 275,000 cubic yards of sand and over 725,000 native plants to dunes from just north of John's Island to just north of Windsor, affecting Treasure Shores, Golden Sands, Wabasso, Seagrape Trail and Turtle Trail beach parks. Indian River County was to pay $3.5 million after $9.5 million in reimbursable grants from FEMA, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Vero News reported on December 21, 2023 that the work began November 27 at Treasure Shores and that county officials anticipated closing Golden Sands Beach Park after the holidays.

What has changed at Golden Sands Park since 2024?

Indian River County has reinvested in the park's facilities. Vero News reported on January 22, 2025 that playgrounds at barrier island parks including Treasure Shores, Round Island Oceanside and Golden Sands had been upgraded with new equipment, completed in September 2024 at a cost of $451,021 from the 1 percent optional sales tax, and that the parking lot at Golden Sands Beach Park was resurfaced at a cost of $345,358. The same article noted that $1 million in Windsor Funds was donated to the county in 2016 by Windsor Properties in exchange for a portion of Golden Sands Park, money earmarked for Hobart Park and other recreational and conservation lands.

Safety equipment was added in 2024. Vero News reported on October 2, 2024 that the Board of County Commissioners approved an agreement with the Rotary Club of Vero Beach Sunrise Foundation to place Drown Zero posts holding flotation rings at county beaches, and that the initial 11 Indian River stations included Ambersand, Treasure Shores, Golden Sands and Wabasso Beach Park. The rings are meant for use when a beach is unguarded or the lifeguard is off duty, as at Golden Sands after 4:50 p.m.

Beach conditions are tracked by county staff. Vero News reported on March 6, 2025 that oil and tar had washed ashore on Indian River County barrier island beaches for the first time in about seven years, spotted from Round Island Beach Park north to Golden Sands Beach, and that county beach operations staff were placing warning signs at each beach. Refuge staff have also used the park for outreach: Vero News reported that during National Wildlife Refuge Week in October 2021, sea turtle Meet and Greets were held at Golden Sands Park, 10350 State Road A1A.
