Roseland — Sebastian, Florida

Roseland, on the south bank of the St. Sebastian River north of Sebastian, traces its name to wild roses and its community center to the river's first bridge.

Short answer: Roseland is an unincorporated community in northern Indian River County on the St. Sebastian River, just north of the City of Sebastian, with its own ZIP code, 32957. The Florida Department of State marker credits Dempsey Cain, who settled in 1877, with naming it for wild roses; a post office followed in 1892 and an East Coast Railway depot in 1893.

What is Roseland?

Roseland is an unincorporated community in northern Indian River County, set on the south bank of the St. Sebastian River just north of the City of Sebastian. It is not part of the city. Vero News described it in December 2012 as the area spanning from the Indian River west to the Sebastian city limits, technically unincorporated Indian River County but with its own ZIP code, 32957, and recognition as a census-designated place. Road signs quoted in the same 2012 report welcome travelers to Historic Roseland, established in 1892.

The community's identity rests on its age and its river. The Florida Department of State historical marker for Roseland, listed with the year 2014 and placed at 12973 Bay Street, traces the place from the Ays (Ais) Indians through a Spanish-era land grant, a pioneer homesteader, a railroad depot and a 1910 land company. Indian River County still operates the Roseland Community Park and its historic community building on the riverbank, and local groups continue to document Roseland's past alongside the history of neighboring Sebastian.

How did Roseland get its name, and who settled it?

The state marker begins before American settlement. It records that the Ays Indians lived along the confluence of the St. Sebastian and the Indian River when the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, and that for centuries afterward settlement in the Indian River area stayed close to the coast, where citrus, pineapples and fishing were the main industries.

Land title in Roseland reaches back to Spanish Florida. In 1816, according to the marker, George Fleming, an Irishman who had served in the army of Spanish Florida, received a large land grant on both sides of the St. Sebastian River, a grant that shaped later development along the river. Roseland's first citizen, in the marker's words, was Dempsey Cain, who settled on the north side of the river in 1877. Cain is credited with naming the community on the south side of the river Roseland after the wild roses that grew there in abundance.

A second account comes from the 1937 WPA Historical Sketch of Indian River County, preserved on Florida Memory. Its writers stated that D. B. Gibson owned land on the west bank of the Indian River on which the original town of Roseland was located, and that the old Gibson House was a well known tavern visited by Grover Cleveland and Joe Jefferson. The same sketch credits the old Sebastian Land Company, organized by Frank Allen, as the originator of the town of Roseland, tying the community's founding to the same land interests active in early Sebastian.

How did the railroad and land companies shape Roseland?

Roseland grew as transportation reached the St. Sebastian River. The state marker records that, as more settlers arrived, a post office was built in 1892, and in 1893 a depot and water tower were constructed for Henry Flagler's East Coast Railway. The 1892 post office date matches the established in 1892 wording on the community's road signs reported by Vero News in 2012.

The next phase was a land venture. In 1910, the marker states, the A.A. Berry Land Development Company purchased the remnants of the old Fleming land grant, and the original Berry Land Office Building still stands in Roseland. The Vero News retelling of the marker text in 2015 sets the 1910 purchase beside the line that the south side of the St. Sebastian River became the community of Roseland.

Development pressure returned in the twentieth century. Vero News reported in 2012 that Roseland residents banded together in the mid-1970s to oppose development; the Riverwalk Shopping Center and a nearby retail plaza were built anyway, but residents did stop the widening of Roseland Road.

What is the Roseland Community Building?

The best known structure in Roseland is its community building on the river. The state marker dates the Roseland Community Center to 1926 and states that it was built of lumber salvaged from the first bridge to cross the St. Sebastian River. Indian River County materials reported by Sebastian Daily in April 2022 give 1927 as the construction year, so the building is variously dated to 1926 or 1927.

Indian River County has invested in the structure repeatedly. According to Sebastian Daily, the county undertook a major renovation of the Roseland Community Building in 2017 to address structural and aesthetic issues. On November 17, 2020, the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners hired a contractor for building and site improvements; work began January 25, 2021, additional termite damage was found, and on March 2, 2021 the board approved the extra cost. The county Parks and Recreation Department scheduled a grand reopening for Tuesday, April 26, 2022, with refreshments from the Roseland Women's Club.

The Indian River County parks listing places Roseland Community Park at 12925 83rd Avenue in Roseland. The park covers 0.74 acres, is open daily from 7 a.m. to sunset, and includes the community building, a boardwalk to the Sebastian River, a covered pavilion and a grill; the county directs building rentals to the Roseland Women's Club.

How is Roseland recognized as a historic place?

Roseland holds a Florida Heritage Site designation. Vero News reported on May 11, 2015 that the designation marker had been dedicated the previous month at the Roseland Community Center building on Bay Street, after years of work by members of the Roseland Community Association. Indian River County Historian Ruth Stanbridge, representing the Indian River County Historical Society, worked with the association to assemble the research the Florida Department of State's Bureau of Historic Preservation requires.

The same report explains the format: the text for each marker must fit within 19 lines and 1,235 characters, and county historical markers are funded through grants from the Tourist Development Council of Indian River County. The finished Roseland marker condenses the community's story, from the Ays to the 1926 community center, into that space.

Documentation continues. Sebastian Daily reported in October 2024 that the Roseland Community Association, the Indian River County Historical Society and the Sebastian Area Historical Society presented Purely Roseland, a mini documentary in the Historical Society's video library series, at the North Indian River County Library on October 22, 2024. Its subjects included the Goodrich Estate, local fishing and crabbing, and the historic Holtzclaw Store.

How does Roseland relate to Sebastian today?

Roseland remains outside the City of Sebastian and is governed by Indian River County. Vero News reported in December 2012 that the census counted roughly 1,472 people in Roseland, down from 1,775 in the 2010 census, living in roughly 850 households, with about one third of residents age 65 or older. Those figures date to that report; a current Roseland figure from a fetchable Census page was not available for this page. For comparison, the adjacent City of Sebastian had 25,759 residents and a median age of 57.6 in the U.S. Census Bureau ACS 2023.

Community life centers on a few shared places. The 2012 Vero News report describes the old firehouse on 129th Court, between U.S. 1 and County Road 512 off Roseland Road, as home to an all volunteer fire rescue company for many decades before Indian River County built a station nearby; the hall now hosts the Roseland Community Association's meetings and an annual heritage barbecue. The same report notes a weekly bluegrass jam at the Roseland community center on Thursday nights and congregations ranging from several Christian denominations to the interfaith Kashi Ashram.
