Jetty Closures and Access — Sebastian, Florida

Bridge construction, inspections, wave damage, dredging and storms: a dated record of what has closed at Sebastian Inlet since 2024 and what is open now.

Short answer: As of October 2026 both Sebastian Inlet jetties are open, but the south jetty is reached only on foot from the day use area south of the inlet, the south beach has no parking lot access and the T-dock is partly closed. The Sebastian Inlet Bridge replacement, begun June 1, 2026, drives most limits through spring 2032. Other closures come from inspections, wave and storm damage, dredging and full parking lots.

Last verified: October 11, 2026, against the sources listed at the end of this page.

Are the Sebastian Inlet jetties open in October 2026?

Yes: as of the Sebastian Inlet District report for the week of October 5, 2026, both Sebastian Inlet jetties are open, but the south jetty is reached only on foot and the south beach has no parking lot access.

The north jetty has been open since June 30, 2025, when the District finished an eight-month repair job (Sebastian Inlet District). It is reached from the North Ranger Station, which Florida State Parks keeps open 24 hours a day. The South Ranger Station has kept 8 a.m. to sunset hours since Nov. 12, 2025, with after-hours entry limited to registered campers and annual pass holders with a permit (Florida State Parks).

The south side of Sebastian Inlet is open in a narrower sense. The District's August 10, 2026 report said the south jetty may only be accessed from the day use parking area south of the inlet, because the bridge replacement closed regular access for the next few years. In the September 21, 2026 report, anglers were walking about three quarters of a mile to reach it. The October 5, 2026 report said nobody was fishing the south surf because of the continued lack of access from the parking lot, and that anglers were fishing only the open section of the T-dock.

Why is the south side of Sebastian Inlet restricted until the 2030s?

The south side of Sebastian Inlet is restricted because FDOT's Sebastian Inlet Bridge replacement, which began June 1, 2026, uses the south parking lot and shoreline east of the old bridge as its work zone.

The Town of Melbourne Beach reports that sections of the Sebastian Inlet State Park North and South Parking Lots will be partially closed around the clock through spring 2032 (Town of Melbourne Beach). The town's October 6, 2026 update adds a traffic shift on A1A starting about 1,400 feet south of the park entrance from Tuesday, October 13, 2026, through late 2028, with traffic moved onto temporary pavement west of the existing road.

Sebastian Daily reported on June 1, 2026 that access to the South Parking Lot east of the bridge, and from that lot to the south jetty, is closed during construction, while the south jetty itself stays open to the public, according to Sebastian Inlet District Commissioner John Campbell (Sebastian Daily). FDOT did not expect to interrupt access to the north jetty. Lane closures on A1A are permitted Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., with flaggers keeping traffic moving toward the North Parking Lot.

Florida State Parks states plainly on the Sebastian Inlet State Park page that access to the beach from the south side is unavailable due to the construction. The first weeks were the tightest. The District's June 8, 2026 report said the south jetty was closed because of the bridge project and that the entire north parking lot was fenced except one row of spaces, before walk-in access to the south jetty was arranged.

Why do the Sebastian Inlet jetties close for inspections and repairs?

The Sebastian Inlet jetties close for inspections and repairs because the Sebastian Inlet District must keep the structures sound for navigation, and crews open the decking or rebuild sections the public would otherwise walk on.

Inspections are routine. The District writes that every couple of years both jetties undergo a structural assessment, that crews remove many of the 59 aluminum grates from the north jetty to look at the concrete framework, and that the open holes are why public access to the jetties is closed while the engineers work (Sebastian Inlet District). The District's April 20, 2026 report announced that the north and south jetties would be closed on Tuesday, April 21, and Wednesday, April 22, for routine annual structural inspections, and listed the south jetty as closed until further notice.

Weather damage causes the unplanned closures. The April 27, 2026 report said park officials reopened the south jetty that morning after it had been closed because of impacts from wave action a couple of weeks earlier. Storm damage also drove the longest closure in recent years: the District's Phase 1 project page says portions of the north jetty had been damaged by previous storms, that contractor Shoreline Foundation, Inc. began staging in November 2024, and that the north jetty reopened on June 30, 2025 after work costing about $2.5 million. The July 1, 2025 report counted about 150 people at the north jetty on reopening day.

More north jetty work is scheduled. The District's Phases 2 and 3 page states that the April 2026 inspection recommended major structural repairs, including 48 pre-stressed concrete piles and new jetty decking, with the bid award anticipated on October 14, 2026 and construction beginning in late 2026 or early 2027. The District had not posted closure dates for that phase as of October 10, 2026.

Why does the T-dock at Sebastian Inlet keep closing?

The T-dock on the lagoon side of Sebastian Inlet has closed mainly for the Sebastian Inlet District's channel dredging, which uses the dock area for pipes and equipment, and since June 2026 for safety reasons.

Dredging closures came twice in a year. The March 10, 2025 report said the T-dock and surrounding parking area were closed for the duration of the dredging project, and the June 2, 2025 report announced the dock reopened that Saturday while the north jetty was still shut. The next cycle began in late 2025: the November 24, 2025 report listed the T-dock as closed to the public for the District's dredging project, and by the December 8, 2025 report park management was opening it on weekends only. The March 30, 2026 report said the dock was open 24/7 with no more closures.

The current limit is different. The District's June 29, 2026 report said the T-dock was closed indefinitely for safety reasons, although the area around it at Sebastian Inlet stayed accessible. Later 2026 reports describe restricted access and anglers using only the open section of the dock.

When does Sebastian Inlet State Park close to visitors?

Sebastian Inlet State Park is open 24 hours a day, but its north side closes to incoming cars when full, and the Florida Park Service closes the whole park when tropical storm watches or warnings are posted.

Florida State Parks warns that on weekends and during peak visitation periods the north side of Sebastian Inlet State Park may reach capacity and temporarily close to incoming visitors (Florida State Parks). The bridge project made that more frequent: the District's June 8, 2026 report said capacity had been reduced by two thirds and the park was shutting down when it filled. The District's webcam page carries a standing notice about limited parking at Sebastian Inlet because of FDOT bridge construction (Sebastian Inlet District webcam).

Storms close everything. In the report for the week of September 29, 2025, posted October 2, the District said the north jetty had been closed on the Saturday and that the Florida Park Service in Tallahassee closed the park for the weekend because of tropical storm watches and warnings for the Sebastian Inlet area. The watches were later canceled.

Where are Sebastian Inlet closures announced?

Sebastian Inlet closures are announced on the Florida State Parks park page, the Sebastian Inlet District's Important Notices page and the District's Monday fishing reports.

Two agencies share the job. The Sebastian Inlet District maintains the jetties, but its FAQ notes that park access, fishing piers and catwalks are directed by the Florida Park Service. The District's Important Notices page is meant to carry any Sebastian Inlet State Park or jetty closures and notices for boaters, and lists the District office at (321) 724-5175. The fishing report index says the weekly report is published on Mondays, and recent reports open with the week's access changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the north jetty at Sebastian Inlet open?

Yes. The north jetty reopened on June 30, 2025 after an eight-month repair project and was open in the Sebastian Inlet District reports of fall 2026. Phases 2 and 3 of north jetty work were expected to start in late 2026 or early 2027, with closure dates not yet posted.

How do anglers reach the south jetty during the bridge construction?

The Sebastian Inlet District says the south jetty may only be accessed from the day use parking area south of the inlet while the bridge is replaced. Its September 21, 2026 report described anglers walking about three quarters of a mile to the jetty with light gear.

How long will the Sebastian Inlet Bridge work affect parking?

The Town of Melbourne Beach reports that sections of the Sebastian Inlet State Park North and South Parking Lots will be partially closed around the clock through spring 2032. An A1A traffic shift near the park entrance runs from October 13, 2026 through late 2028.

Why were both Sebastian Inlet jetties closed in April 2026?

The Sebastian Inlet District closed the north and south jetties on April 21 and 22, 2026 for routine annual structural inspections. The south jetty had also been closed after wave damage earlier that month and reopened on the morning of April 27, 2026.

Does Sebastian Inlet State Park close during storms?

Yes. In late September 2025 the Florida Park Service closed Sebastian Inlet State Park for a weekend because of tropical storm watches and warnings, and the north jetty was closed that Saturday, according to the Sebastian Inlet District report posted October 2, 2025.
