Road Closures and Traffic Alerts — Sebastian, Florida

From the Laconia Street bridge to the FEC crossings at Main Street and Sebastian Boulevard, Sebastian road closures are posted by the city, the county and FDOT.

Short answer: Sebastian drivers check road and lane closures on the City of Sebastian Traffic Alert Map, linked from the city Alert Center under Road Closings since March 18, 2025, and can get Road Closures notices by email or text through Notify Me. County roads such as Roseland Road appear on the Indian River County Road Closures Map, and FDOT posts US 1 and S.R. 510 lane closures in a weekly Treasure Coast Traffic Report and on FL511.

Where can drivers check road closures in Sebastian?

Drivers in Sebastian check closures on three government sources: the City of Sebastian Traffic Alert Map for city streets, the Indian River County Road Closures Map for county roads, and FDOT postings for US 1 and other state highways.

Which source applies depends on who owns the road. The city lists its Traffic Alert Map as an interactive map showing road and lane closures around Sebastian related to construction and infrastructure projects around the city (City of Sebastian). County roads such as Roseland Road and CR 512 fall under Indian River County Traffic Engineering, which links a Road Closures Map from its division page (Indian River County). US 1 and the widened S.R. 510 are state roads, and FDOT District Four posts their lane closures in a weekly Treasure Coast Traffic Report; the edition on its page on October 10, 2026 covered October 9 to October 16, 2026 (FDOT District Four).

Railroad work adds a fourth layer. Closures at the Florida East Coast Railway crossings in Sebastian are scheduled by the railroad or its contractors, then announced through the city and county and reported by Sebastian Daily, as the crossing section below shows. What does the City of Sebastian Traffic Alert Map show?

The City of Sebastian Traffic Alert Map shows road and lane closures tied to city construction and infrastructure work, and the city Alert Center has pointed to it under Road Closings since March 18, 2025.

The map sits in the How Do I menu of the city website under Find, beside garbage, garage sale and tropical weather information (City of Sebastian). The city Alert Center lists current items by category. On October 10, 2026 its Road Closings category held one alert, dated March 18, 2025 at 11:08 AM, titled Traffic Alert Map, with a link to a brand new map of road closures (City of Sebastian Alert Center). The Alert Center offers Notify Me and RSS for instant notice of new items.

Subscriptions are free and opt in. The Sebastian Notify Me page carries a Road Closures list and a Parks/Facilities Closures list, and the Alert Center module adds a separate Road Closings list. A subscriber picks email, text or both; text delivery needs a phone number, and the page states that standard text messaging rates apply (City of Sebastian Notify Me).

For longer range planning, the city also posts a Capital Improvement Projects Web Map under Administrative Services and City Financials, which places funded city projects on a map of Sebastian. Questions about a city closure go to the Sebastian Citizens Request Line at (772) 581-0111, the number the city prints on its drainage project pages (City of Sebastian).

Why do railroad crossings close in Sebastian?

Sebastian crossings close when Brightline, the Florida East Coast Railway or their contractors rebuild or repair the crossings at Roseland Road, Schumann Drive, Barber Street, Main Street and Sebastian Boulevard.

Reported railroad crossing closures in Sebastian, 2022 to 2026

Roseland RoadAug. 11 to Aug. 14, 2026Wabtec surface crossing maintenance; detour via CR 512 and US 1 (Sebastian Daily)

The 2022 closures came with the upgrade of the FEC line for Brightline. All traffic was shut at both Sebastian Boulevard crossings from 9:00 a.m. on Feb. 28, 2022 until 5:00 p.m. on March 15, 2022, with a detour route posted via Roseland Road and US 1, a county Public Works spokesperson told Sebastian Daily. City Manager Paul Carlisle asked Brightline to close one crossing at a time; the railroad said that could delay the project longer, so Indian River County retimed signals instead, and Carlisle urged drivers to use Roseland Road or CR 510 rather than Main Street (Sebastian Daily).

Main Street proved the hardest crossing to schedule. In April 2022 its closure was moved to June 1 to June 15, 2022, and the city said it would warn motorists on its Electronic Message Boards at City Hall and Riverview Park seven days before construction (Sebastian Daily). A month later Barber Street reopened early while Main Street was postponed again, because track switching and realigning made that crossing a little more complicated (Sebastian Daily).

Closures also follow breakdowns. On May 31, 2023, Carlisle asked drivers to avoid Main Street and both CR 512 crossings because the crossing equipment had malfunctioned, while the Schumann Drive, Barber Street and Roseland Road crossings kept operating (Sebastian Daily). In October 2023 the Florida East Coast Railroad gave short notice of closures caused by an unexpected Brightline incident, and Brightline absorbed the repair costs (Sebastian Daily).

How do city drainage projects close streets in the Sebastian Highlands?

City stormwater projects in the Sebastian Highlands close streets where a drainage canal or ditch crosses under the road, as Laconia Street was closed in 2025 for the Stonecrop project.

The Stonecrop project replaced storm piping under Laconia Street with a precast ConSpan bridge between ditch work running from Laconia Street to Bevan Drive and on to Stonecrop Street. The city posted the schedule on its project page: Phase 1B roadway work at Laconia Street ran February to June 2025, with road closures tentatively set for Feb. 3 to March 28, 2025 and message boards and detour signs placed to inform drivers. Mobilization slipped to Feb. 3, 2025, and an April 22, 2025 update extended the Laconia Street closure through June and closed Bevan Drive between Majestic and Montrose from April 21 to May 2, 2025.

The last step shows how a Sebastian closure can end in two stages. On June 30, 2025, Laconia Street reopened in a temporary condition for about two weeks so traffic could compact the new road base, then closed again for the final mill and overlay of the pavement, with all restoration set to finish by the end of July 2025 (City of Sebastian).

A second Highlands project followed. The Riviera and Gardenia project pipes an eroding ditch from Riviera Avenue to Chelsea Avenue, between Gardenia Street and Evernia Street in Sebastian Highlands Unit 5, under a shallow swale. The city states that driveway culverts and road crossings in the area will also be impacted, and its schedule ran from pre-construction in November 2025 to site restoration in early May 2026. Both pages are posted under the city Stormwater department, where updates on Sebastian street work appear alongside the Traffic Alert Map.

Where are state and county closures near Sebastian posted?

FDOT District Four posts lane closures on US 1 and State Road 510 near Sebastian in a weekly Treasure Coast Traffic Report, and FL511 maps state highway incidents and work zones in real time.

FL511, the state map that covers US 1 and I-95 around Sebastian, describes itself as Florida's official source for real time traffic information (FL511). Its map layers include closures, detour routes, construction zones, traffic cameras, message signs, drawbridge crossings and rail crossings marked clear or blocked, and registered users can set up My Routes notifications and text alerts. The rail crossing layer matters on the FEC corridor through Sebastian, where a blocked crossing at Main Street or Sebastian Boulevard can back traffic onto US 1.

State work on US 1 shows how FDOT handles a Sebastian lane closure. In November 2023 FDOT closed one southbound lane of US 1 intermittently from Harrison Street, near Riverview Park, to Davis Street, from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Nov. 6 to Nov. 9, during a 1.472 mile resurfacing and sidewalk project (Sebastian Daily). The current state project on the Sebastian side of the county is the S.R. 510/85th Street widening from S.R. 512/Sebastian Boulevard to west of 87th Street, which started Oct. 29, 2025 with completion listed for fall 2028 (FDOT).

County roads go through Indian River County Traffic Engineering, at 1801 27th Street in Vero Beach, phone (772) 226-1547 (Indian River County). The division runs the county traffic signals, the signal control room and the traffic cameras, which is why Indian River County, not the city, retimed the signals around Sebastian during the 2022 Sebastian Boulevard crossing closure.

Which Sebastian events close Indian River Drive?

The City of Sebastian Christmas Parade closes Indian River Drive along its route between the Main Street boat ramp and Riverview Park on parade afternoon.

For the Dec. 7, 2024 parade, which stepped off at 6:30 p.m., Sebastian Daily reported that Indian River Drive along the parade route would close at 3:00 p.m. The route starts at the Main Street boat ramp and runs south along Indian River Drive to Riverview Park, so riverfront traffic shifts to US 1 for the evening. Event closures on Indian River Drive are announced by the city ahead of each date rather than shown as construction on the Traffic Alert Map.

Frequently asked questions

Does the City of Sebastian send road closure alerts by text?

Yes. The Sebastian Notify Me system offers a Road Closures list and an Alert Center Road Closings list by email or text. Text delivery needs a phone number, and the city notes that standard text messaging rates apply. The lists are separate from Alert Indian River, the county emergency system.

Who closes the railroad crossings in Sebastian?

The railroad side schedules the work. Brightline, the Florida East Coast Railway and contractors such as HSR Constructors and Wabtec Corporation have closed the Sebastian Boulevard, Main Street, Barber Street and Roseland Road crossings since 2022, with detours posted by Indian River County and the city.

What is the usual detour when Sebastian Boulevard closes at the tracks?

In 2022 and 2023 the posted detour ran via Roseland Road and US 1. Eastbound CR 512 traffic went north on Roseland Road to US 1 and back south, and westbound traffic used the same loop in reverse, according to WQCS and Sebastian Daily.

Where are lane closures on US 1 in Sebastian announced?

US 1 is a state highway, so FDOT District Four lists its lane closures in the weekly Treasure Coast Traffic Report and FL511 maps them. In November 2023, for example, FDOT closed one southbound lane between Harrison Street and Davis Street for sidewalk work.

Who answers questions about a city road closure in Sebastian?

The City of Sebastian Citizens Request Line at (772) 581-0111 takes questions about city projects such as the Stonecrop and Riviera and Gardenia drainage work. County road questions go to Indian River County Traffic Engineering at (772) 226-1547.
