Short answer: The University of Tampa Spartans have won 11 NCAA Division II baseball championships, most recently in 2024, 2025 and 2026, when Tampa became the first program to win three straight Division II baseball titles. Spartan teams have also won men's soccer titles in 1981, 1994 and 2001, volleyball titles in 2014 and 2021, and a 2007 women's soccer title. The university lists 24 Division II national championships overall.
Why is the University of Tampa a Division II baseball power?
The short version is a title count no other Division II program matches. The NCAA Division II baseball championship history lists Tampa as national champion in 1992, 1993, 1998, 2006, 2007, 2013, 2015, 2019, 2024, 2025 and 2026. In June 2026 the Spartans beat West Chester 8-4 in a decisive Game 3 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, and the University of Tampa reported that they became the first baseball team to win a third consecutive Division II title. That was the 11th national title in program history, and the team finished 51-9.
The run built over decades. When Tampa won its ninth title in June 2024 with an 8-3 win over Angelo State to finish 52-8, the Sunshine State Conference noted that Tampa had tied Florida Southern for the most Division II baseball championships and that the Spartans' six titles in the 2000s were more than any other school had won at any NCAA level. Two more followed in 2025 and 2026, moving Tampa clear of that tie. Inside the conference, the Tampa athletics department counts 25 regular-season Sunshine State Conference baseball titles, the most recent in 2026.
The program's first breakthrough came in 1992. NCAA records show the 42-19 Spartans beating Mansfield 11-8 in Montgomery, Alabama, and the 1993 team repeated with a 7-5 win over Cal Poly. A UT History Series article from April 2020 notes that the 1992 roster drew heavily on Tampa Bay area players, with 14 local players on the team. Home games are played at the University of Tampa Baseball Field, a 750-seat park with 325-400-375 foot dimensions on the old fairgrounds just north of Pepin Stadium, according to the athletics quick facts.
What other national championships have the Spartans won?
Soccer delivered UT's first title. The 1981 men's team went 15-0-3 and beat Cal State Los Angeles 1-0 in overtime, according to a 2020 UT History Series account of Tampa's first national championship. The men's soccer championship history adds titles in 1994, 3-0 in double overtime against Oakland, and in 2001, 2-1 over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a final played in Tampa.
Women's teams have added more. The Division II volleyball history lists Tampa as champion in 2014 at 33-1 and in 2021 at 34-2, the second won on home ground in Tampa, while the women's soccer history records a 2007 Tampa title won on penalty kicks after a 0-0 double overtime final against Franklin Pierce. The University of Tampa's university profile lists 24 NCAA Division II national championships in all. The 2020 soccer history article counted 18 titles across six sports heading into the 2020-21 academic year, so roughly a quarter of the total has arrived since then.
How do the Spartans fare in the Sunshine State Conference?
Tampa has played in the Sunshine State Conference since 1981, according to the athletics quick facts, which list 20 NCAA varsity sports. Women compete in basketball, beach volleyball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, outdoor track and field and volleyball. The Tampa SSC championships page counts 150 regular-season conference titles across 16 sports. What happened to University of Tampa football?
Football was the Spartans' first headline sport. A 2019 UT History Series profile says UT began its football program in 1933, and a Hillsborough County historical marker at the former Plant Field records that the university played home games there from 1933 to 1936. The program grew more ambitious after Tampa Stadium opened in 1967 with 46,481 seats. Over its final seven seasons the team went 54-21, including a 21-18 Tangerine Bowl win over Kent State to close the 1972 season. UT produced 17 NFL draft selections, 16 of them between 1969 and 1975, among them defensive end John Matuszak, the No. 1 overall pick in 1973.
One game reached beyond sports. On November 29, 1969, Florida A&M beat UT 34-28 before a sold-out crowd of 46,477 at the old Tampa Stadium. A UT History Series account calls it the first interracial football game ever played in the South, contested two years before the integration of Tampa's public schools. The program ended abruptly after the 1974 season, when UT's Board of Trustees voted 16-9 on a finance committee recommendation to drop football and cancel the 1975 season, with the university president citing a $170,000 debt.
Where do the Spartan name and colors come from?
The name came from a rivalry that had not yet happened. According to the Tampa athletics history page, varsity competition began in 1931, when the school was still Tampa Junior College, and a committee named the teams the Spartans because St. Petersburg Junior College, nicknamed the Trojans, was meant to be the arch-rival across the bay.
The colors trace to two Tampa high schools. When the school moved into the Tampa Bay Hotel in 1933, head football coach Nash Higgins, who was also athletic director from 1933 to 1941, picked the team colors. Many of his players came from Hillsborough High, which wore red and black, and from Plant High, which wore black and gold, so he combined them into the red, black and gold the University of Tampa still uses.
Where do the Spartans play?
Most Spartan venues sit on the campus along the Hillsborough River. The athletics facilities page describes the Bob Martinez Athletics Center as a 3,432-seat arena for volleyball and men's and women's basketball. It calls Pepin Stadium, the 1,500-seat soccer venue built on the former Plant Field, the finest soccer venue in NCAA II, and says it hosted two national championship finals in the 1990s, including a Division II record crowd of 4,336 in 1994, plus the 2001 men's soccer final. The quick facts list the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex for lacrosse, the Vince Naimoli Family Softball Field, the Riseman Aquatics Center for swimming and a beach volleyball complex.
Pepin Stadium also carries a city rivalry. The 2020 UT soccer history recalls that when the university dedicated the new Pepin/Rood Stadium for the 1982 Mayor's Cup game against USF, the stadium seated about 3,300, but more than 6,000 fans attended with temporary grandstands added on the far side.
