Vero Beach South, Florida: Community Guide

Vero Beach South is a census designated place in Indian River County, the Census type for closely settled, unincorporated communities identified by name (Census page on CDPs), listed apart from the City of Vero Beach (2024 Gazetteer, Florida).

The Census Bureau's 2024 place gazetteer lists Vero Beach South CDP under place code 1274200 with 11.777 square miles of land and 0.621 square miles of water. Vero Beach city has its own row under place code 1274150, with land of 11.582 square miles and water of 1.905 square miles, so the two places appear as different geographies with their own codes, and Census figures for one never include the other (2024 Gazetteer rows for Vero Beach South and Vero Beach).

The name causes most of the confusion. The Census geocoder matches addresses inside Vero Beach South, such as 206 30th Ave, with the mailing city Vero Beach and ZIP code 32968 (Census geocoder result for 206 30th Ave), while two county facilities whose addresses also read Vero Beach match to a different Census place, as the schools and parks section below shows. A Vero Beach mailing address alone therefore does not show whether a home lies in the City of Vero Beach, in Vero Beach South or in another unincorporated community of Indian River County; the geocoder answers that address by address.

The ACS 2020-2024 5-year estimates count 30,344 people in Vero Beach South, with a median age of 48.8 and 30.2 percent of residents aged 65 or older.

In the Census Bureau's DP05 table for Vero Beach South CDP, the population estimate of 30,344 carries a margin of error of plus or minus 1,835. The same table counts 4,924 residents under 18, or 16.2 percent, and 9,166 residents aged 65 or older (ACS 2020-2024 DP05, Vero Beach South CDP).

Citrus Elementary School, a School District of Indian River County school for grades K-5 that calls itself a School of Agriscience and Community Citizenship, lists a 9:00 am to 3:40 pm school day and (772) 978-8350 as its main number. Its own website lists the address as 2771 Citrus Road, Vero Beach, FL 32968 (Citrus Elementary School site), while the district's 2026-2027 Parent Guide lists 2771 4th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32968 (SDIRC 2026-2027 Parent Guide). The geocoder matches the 2771 4th Street address to Vero Beach South CDP, while the school site's 2771 Citrus Road form returned no geocoder match (Census geocoder, 2771 Citrus Road).

Lone Pine Park, at 206 30th Avenue, is open daily from 7am to sunset, and Indian River County calls it possibly the smallest park in the county, with a playground and fenced grounds but no parking (Indian River County Lone Pine Park page); the geocoder places that address in Vero Beach South CDP as well (Census geocoder, 206 30th Ave).

The county's Intergenerational Recreation Center at 1590 9th St SW, Vero Beach, FL 32962, built in 2016 with a 13,425 square foot event hall and gymnasium (iG Center page), matches to Florida Ridge CDP in the geocoder (Census geocoder, 1590 9th St SW), and so does Vero Highlands Park at 413 21st St SW, listed on the county parks page (Indian River County parks and beaches list; Census geocoder, 413 21st St SW). Neither address lies inside the Vero Beach South CDP.
