Short answer: MacWilliam Park is a City of Vero Beach park on the Indian River Lagoon just north of Riverside Park, near the east end of the Merrill P. Barber Bridge. It holds the public MacWilliam Boat Ramps at 3361 Bridge Plaza Drive with trailer parking, picnic shelters and restrooms, the Riverhouse rental hall, a Power Squadron building, youth ball fields and a leased 5.8-acre off-leash dog park.
What is MacWilliam Park?
MacWilliam Park is the City of Vero Beach's riverfront park and public boat launch on the barrier island, set along the Indian River Lagoon just north of Riverside Park near the east end of the Merrill P. Barber Bridge. The city lists two facilities under the name: the MacWilliam Boat Ramps at 3361 Bridge Plaza Drive, and MacWilliam Park at 3341 Bridge Plaza Drive, which offers parking, picnic areas, picnic shelters, picnic tables, restrooms and water.
Several other uses share the Vero Beach site. The Riverhouse, a city-owned event hall, stands in MacWilliam Park adjacent to and just north of Riverside Park, according to Vero News, which reported in May 2018 that it was rented for more than 200 private, club and organization events per year and noted ball fields where children play baseball nearby. The Vero Beach Power Squadron has its own building in the park, and a leased off-leash dog park occupies land at the north end.
Because it mixes a boat basin, a rental hall, youth baseball, a dog park and picnic shelters, MacWilliam Park works more as a neighborhood utility than a destination. Its parking lot, ramp lanes and trailer area are what most visitors see.
What are the MacWilliam Park boat ramps like?
The ramps are public launch lanes on the lagoon, listed by the City of Vero Beach as the MacWilliam Boat Ramps with the Recreation Department as the contact. Trailer parking sits alongside; a 2018 city staff email quoted by the Indian River Guardian referred to the MacWilliam Boat Basin, the Power Squadron lease and a dirt trailer parking area used for overflow.
The MacWilliam ramp is one of two city launches on the island, the other being the Memorial Island ramp at Riverside Park. When Hurricane Nicole destroyed the Riverside Park floating docks in November 2022, boaters shifted north. In May 2024, Vero Beach 32963 reported that some Vero Beach owners of mid-size boats were launching at the MacWilliams Park boat ramp instead, and quoted one who said that ramp is not designed for larger boats and was handling more traffic than it was built for.
Its position on the lagoon shapes how it is used. In February 2026, when Indian River County closed the Round Island Park ramp for a month of repairs, Vero Beach 32963 named the Riverside Park and MacWilliam Park boat ramps in Vero Beach as better alternatives, 15 minutes north of Round Island, although 8 miles further from ocean access at the Fort Pierce Inlet.
Who is MacWilliam Park named for?
The city's 2014 charter ballot question called the property Alex MacWilliam Boat Basin Park, according to the Indian River Guardian. The name is shared by a prominent Vero Beach family. Vero Beach 32963 reported in 2012 that Alex MacWilliam Sr., a decorated World War I veteran who oversaw construction of the Riomar golf course, ended up the mayor of Vero Beach for 20 years, and that while in the Legislature he got the state to parcel off for the city the land that is now Riverside Park, the park immediately south of MacWilliam Park.
The sources reviewed for this page do not state which member of the family the park honors or when the name was adopted, so the dedication date remains a research gap. The same family figures in the history of nearby Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary, which Alex MacWilliam Sr. championed after World War II.
Are dogs allowed at MacWilliam Park?
Yes, on leash, and MacWilliam Park was one of the first Vero Beach parks to allow them. Before the City Council expanded its list of dog-friendly parks in February 2014, leashed dogs were allowed at only two city parks, MacWilliam Park and Michael Field, the Indian River Guardian reported. The current city listing for the ramps keeps the rule: on-leash dogs are allowed in MacWilliam Park excluding restrooms, and on the boat ramp and trailer parking area excluding the Riverhouse.
Off-leash dogs have a separate, fenced home. In March 2014 the council approved a 10-year lease, renewable for another 10, of 5.8 acres west and north of Bob Summers field in MacWilliam Park, near the east end of the Merrill P. Barber Bridge, for an annual rent of $25, according to the Indian River Guardian; dog owners had used the area informally for 12 years. The city now lists the Vero Beach Dog Park at 3449 Indian River Drive East, open dawn to dusk, with grass fields, a pavilion, chairs and parking, operated by a nonprofit using only private donations.
What is the Riverhouse, and why was it debated?
The Riverhouse is the city's lagoonfront event hall in MacWilliam Park and appears on the Vero Beach Recreation Department's list of rental facilities. It is protected by the city charter, so it cannot be sold outright or leased without a referendum of city voters, Vero News reported in May 2018.
That protection was tested in 2018, when the City Council directed staff to draft terms that would let a craft brewery relocate into the building. The Indian River Guardian reported that the city attorney steered the discussion toward a concession license because the charter bars leasing the property unless it serves a public or civic purpose with a recreational or artistic use. Neighbors raised concerns about noise and parking shared with the youth baseball fields and the dog park. According to Vero News, the Recreation Commission refused to recommend the plan and the proposal was withdrawn; the city instead kept renting the Riverhouse, which had been damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and renovated, for private functions, although it continued to operate at a loss.
Other groups have sought space in the Vero Beach park. In 2010 the Indian River Rowing Club asked the Recreation Commission for a 25-year lease to build a 6,000-square-foot boathouse between the Riverhouse and the dog park, shared with the Youth Sailing Foundation, at a privately funded cost of $300,000 to $360,000, Vero News reported; the commission sent the idea to a public workshop.
What happens at the Power Squadron building and after storms?
The Vero Beach Power Squadron building in MacWilliam Park is a base for boating safety education. In May 2012, 45 people and one dog wore life jackets there in a world record attempt tied to National Boating Safety Week, Vero News reported, with squadron officers stressing that Florida law requires anyone born after January 1, 1988, to complete a safe boating course before operating a vessel.
The park has generally reopened quickly after hurricanes. A City of Vero Beach recreation update posted by the Vero Beach Police Department on Sept. 14, 2017, after Hurricane Irma, listed MacWilliam Park among the facilities open the following day, while Royal Palm Pointe, Charles Park, Troy Moody Park and Riverside Park North remained closed.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a fee to launch at the MacWilliam Park boat ramps?
The City of Vero Beach facility listing shows no launch fee for the MacWilliam Boat Ramps at 3361 Bridge Plaza Drive, and the 2026 county reporting on Round Island describes the city ramps as public alternatives. Questions go to the Vero Beach Recreation Department at 772-567-2144.
Can large boats use the MacWilliam Park ramp?
The ramp handles small and mid-size trailered boats. During the 2023 and 2024 Riverside Park dock repairs, one boater told Vero Beach 32963 that the MacWilliam ramp is not designed for larger boats, and that the nearest ramps suited to boats over 20 feet were in Fort Pierce or at Sebastian Inlet.
Where is the Vero Beach Dog Park?
The off-leash Vero Beach Dog Park is on 5.8 acres of city land at the north end of MacWilliam Park, listed at 3449 Indian River Drive East. It is open dawn to dusk and run by a nonprofit under a lease first approved by the City Council in March 2014.
Can the Riverhouse in MacWilliam Park be rented?
Yes. The Riverhouse appears on the City of Vero Beach Recreation Department list of rental facilities, and in 2018 it hosted more than 200 private, club and organization events a year. The charter bars leasing it to a private business without a citywide vote.
How far is MacWilliam Park from the ocean inlet?
Boats launched at MacWilliam Park travel down the Indian River Lagoon to reach the Atlantic. Vero Beach 32963 reported in 2026 that the Vero Beach ramps are about 8 miles farther from the Fort Pierce Inlet than Round Island Park, the county ramp to the south.
