Royal Palm Pointe — Vero Beach, Florida

Short answer: Royal Palm Pointe is a free City of Vero Beach park at 2 Royal Palm Pointe, on the mainland shore of the Indian River Lagoon where the old drawbridge to the barrier island once landed. It opened around 2001 and centers on an interactive fountain, which in 2026 runs weekends from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and daily except Tuesday during school breaks, plus a dock, fishing shoreline and leashed-dog lawn.

What is Royal Palm Pointe?

Royal Palm Pointe is a city park with an interactive fountain at the river end of a short peninsula on the Vero Beach mainland, where the old bridge to the barrier island once landed. The City of Vero Beach facility listing gives the address as 2 Royal Palm Pointe and lists free admission, fishing, an interactive fountain, picnic tables and restrooms, along with ceramic tiled decorations and a ceramic turtle statue among its photographs of palm trees along the river.

The name also covers the street and the small commercial district behind the park. Vero News described Royal Palm Pointe in January 2021 as the former causeway and bridgehead to the barrier island, now a shopping and dining locale with a mix of restaurants, retail shops, single-family homes and businesses within close reach of both the beachside and downtown Vero Beach.

The park itself is compact: a fountain plaza, a dock, restrooms behind a gate and a strip of lawn and palms along the Indian River Lagoon shore. Fishing is listed among its features, and the park sits a short walk from the shops and restaurants that line the rest of Royal Palm Pointe.

Why is there a park at the foot of the old Vero bridge?

The park exists because the road stopped going anywhere. In a February 2011 story marking the park's tenth year, Vero News recalled that before the new Merrill Barber Bridge was built, drivers crossing to the beach had to allow extra time for the low drawbridge, which opened often for boat traffic. When the new bridge opened, the old drawbridge was demolished, leaving the merchants on the east side of Royal Palm Drive, who had relied on a main thoroughfare, to find a new way to draw customers. The result, the paper wrote, was the waterside park.

The same story said a decade had passed since Royal Palm Point opened, which places the opening around 2001. The City of Vero Beach sponsored the 10th anniversary celebration, with performances by the Beachland Elementary School Chorus, the Vero Beach Recreation Department Gymnastic Team and the Vero Beach High School Band, and the sitting council paid tribute to the former council members who had presided over the park's conception and planning.

Later development reached the very end of the point. In December 2015, Vero News reported that Quail Valley Club was building a restaurant and hotel at the end of Royal Palm Pointe, with a custom launch planned to ferry members every half hour to its River Club across the lagoon, and that a luxury townhouse project was rising 200 yards to the west on canal frontage.

When does the Royal Palm Pointe fountain run?

The fountain schedule has changed many times, so the city listing is the reference. As of October 8, 2026, the City of Vero Beach states that the fountain operates Saturday and Sunday only from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and that during Indian River County public school spring break and summer break it runs every day except Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The park is closed Tuesdays for maintenance, and the city refers families to the school district calendar for break dates.

Earlier schedules were more generous. In March 2014, Vero News reported that the fountain would run Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. between March 16 and Dec. 14, with Sunday operation paid for by the Holiday Rec Run and Holiday Rec Party held on Dec. 6, 2013. A 2016 city release carried by the Indian River Guardian set Wednesday through Saturday hours after spring break, and by March 2021 the Indian River Guardian listed the normal hours as Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the pattern still in place in 2026.

Equipment failures and storms have interrupted service. The fountains closed for repairs in June 2014 while parts were ordered, Vero News reported, and after Hurricane Irma a City of Vero Beach recreation update posted by the Vero Beach Police Department on Sept. 14, 2017, listed Royal Palm Pointe among the parks that remained closed until further notice.

Admission is free under the current city listing. That was not always the case: in December 2018 the Vero Beach recreation director cited a charge to use the fountain as one of the ways the department was being asked to pay for itself, according to Vero News.

Are dogs allowed at Royal Palm Pointe, and how is the park protected?

Leashed dogs are welcome on part of the park. When the Vero Beach City Council expanded its list of dog-friendly parks in February 2014, the Indian River Guardian reported that Royal Palm Pointe Park was included, excluding the splash fountain, restrooms and dock area. The current city listing repeats the rule: it is an on-leash dog area, and dogs are not allowed into the fountains, dock or restroom area, which sit past a gate.

The park also has charter protection. In November 2014, Vero Beach voters were asked whether to amend City Charter Section 5.05 to add a list of properties, including Royal Palm Pointe Park, so as to limit their sale, lease, trade or gift, according to a ballot summary published by the Indian River Guardian.

Planning for the wider point continues. The City of Vero Beach Planning and Development neighborhoods page lists a Royal Palm Pointe Master Plan dated 10 01 2026 among its neighborhood planning documents, alongside plans for McAnsh Park, Osceola Park and Sunnyside Park.

What events are held at Royal Palm Pointe?

The largest recurring event is the Sunrise Rotary Florida Craft Brew and Wingfest. At the fifth annual edition in February 2016, Vero News reported 70 beer vendors and 18 local restaurants competing over wings on Royal Palm Pointe, with organizers expecting 8,000 to 12,000 people and some attendees arriving by pontoon boat from Memorial Island. The 11th annual Wingfest was held on Feb. 18, 2023, with over 200 craft beers, 20 wing vendors and four bands on two stages, according to the Indian River Guardian.

The city has also used the point as a holiday venue. The inaugural Holiday Rec Party on Dec. 6, 2013, filled the parking lot at the end of Royal Palm Pointe and the fountain area with music, booths and a holiday boat parade, and the first city night run began at the Royal Palm Pointe entrance on Indian River Boulevard, looped through Vero Isles to Young Park and returned, according to the Indian River Guardian.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Royal Palm Pointe fountain free?

Yes. The City of Vero Beach facility listing shows admission to Royal Palm Pointe as free as of October 2026, although the recreation director cited a fountain charge in 2018 as part of a push for the department to cover more of its own costs.

Why is the Royal Palm Pointe park closed on Tuesdays?

The city closes the park every Tuesday for maintenance, including during the school-break weeks when the fountain otherwise runs daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Updates are posted on the City of Vero Beach facility page or by phone at 772-567-2144.

Can dogs play in the Royal Palm Pointe fountain?

No. Royal Palm Pointe is an on-leash dog area, but the city bars dogs from the fountains, the dock and the restroom area, all of which are behind a gate. The rule dates to the council's February 2014 dog-friendly parks resolution.

When did Royal Palm Pointe open?

Vero News marked the park's tenth anniversary in February 2011, which places its opening around 2001, after the old drawbridge at the foot of Royal Palm Drive was removed once the new Merrill Barber Bridge carried traffic to the barrier island.

Where do people park for events at Royal Palm Pointe?

The point has limited public parking. For the 2013 Holiday Rec Party, organizers opened business lots other than restaurant lots plus nearby lots on Indian River Boulevard and Royal Palm Boulevard, and the 2011 anniversary used shuttles from Riverside Theatre.
