Overview
Maranta L. is the type genus of the family Marantaceae R.Br., meaning the family name is directly derived from it. Carl Linnaeus established the genus in Species Plantarum 1: 2, published in 1753, and Plants of the World Online (POWO) records the full authority as Maranta Plum. ex L., acknowledging the pre-Linnaean polynomial treatments of Charles Plumier. [1] The genus comprises rhizomatous, perennial herbs of the order Zingiberales, native from Mexico to Tropical America. [1]
A question frequently posed by collectors concerns the relationship between Maranta and Calathea G.Mey. The direct answer is that Maranta was not involved in the 2012 recircumscription that transferred the bulk of Calathea species to Goeppertia Nees. That recircumscription, published by Borchsenius, Suárez and Prince in Systematic Botany 37(3): 620–635 (2012), concerned the allied genus Calathea — not Maranta. Names published under Maranta did not require new combinations as a consequence of that paper, and the genus nomenclature has remained stable. [1]
The most recent revision of the genus internal arrangement was published in February 2025, when Luna, Fernandes, Christenhusz and Pessoa provided an updated infrageneric classification in Phytotaxa 684(1): 135–138. [2] That paper also formalised an expanded circumscription absorbing formerly recognised small genera — Hylaeanthe A.M.E.Jonker and Jonker, Koernickanthe L.Andersson, and Myrosma L.f. — which molecular data had shown to be polyphyletic. Circumscription and Species Count
POWO, drawing on the International Plant Names Index and World Checklist of Vascular Plants (2026 edition), records 54 accepted species in Maranta Plum. ex L. as of the retrieval date of 12 August 2026. POWO records the native range of Maranta as Mexico to Tropical America, with species documented across South and Central America and particularly in Brazil. [1] Maranta leuconeura É.Morren — the species most frequently encountered in cultivation — has a native range recorded by POWO as Central and eastern Brazil, including the Northeast, Southeast, and West-Central regions, with additional records in Colombia and Mexico Gulf, growing primarily in the wet tropical biome. [1] POWO records the habit of Maranta leuconeura as a subshrub, and notes its first publication in Annales d'Horticulture Belge et Étrangère 24: 323 (1874). [1]
The 2025 Luna et al. paper in Phytotaxa updated the infrageneric classification and formalised the expanded circumscription of the genus. The one taxon that previously lacked an available combination in Maranta — Myrosma cannifolia — received a new combination in that paper, completing the absorption of Myrosma into Maranta. Most combinations for taxa formerly placed in Hylaeanthe and Koernickanthe were already available in Maranta prior to 2025. [2]
Name History
The authority Maranta Plum. ex L. records two distinct stages of nomenclatural history. Charles Plumier used a polynomial name for the plant group in pre-Linnaean literature; Linnaeus formalised the genus name in Species Plantarum 1: 2, published 1 May 1753, citing Miller's prior usage and providing the first validly published names under the binomial system. [1] POWO records 1753 as the formal publication date and Linnaeus as the botanical authority, while the Plumier citation in the authority string acknowledges the pre-Linnaean polynomial tradition. Unlike the situation for Calathea — where Borchsenius, Suárez and Prince published 246 new combinations transferring species to Goeppertia Nees in 2012 — no analogous mass transfer affected Maranta. The genus continued under a stable circumscription from 1753 until the expanded circumscription formalised by Luna et al. in February 2025. [2] That 2025 revision moved in the opposite direction from the 2012 Calathea recircumscription: rather than splitting a large genus, it consolidated three smaller, polyphyletic genera into Maranta, increasing the accepted species count and updating the infrageneric arrangement. The genus name itself has not been subject to any rejection, conservation proposal, or competing synonymy that has gained acceptance. POWO treats Maranta Plum. ex L. as an accepted name without contested synonyms at the genus level, as of the 2026 edition of the World Checklist of Vascular Plants. [1]
