Short answer: Main Street Vero Beach is the nonprofit downtown program for the historic district on 14th Avenue around State Road 60, part of the Main Street America and Florida Main Street network. Funded mostly by memberships and events, not the city, it runs Downtown Friday on the last Friday of each month, the Hibiscus Festival and, since November 2025, a mural festival among galleries, restaurants and Pocahontas Park.
What is Main Street Vero Beach?
Main Street Vero Beach is the nonprofit that promotes and looks after the historic downtown of Vero Beach, the grid of older commercial blocks centered on 14th Avenue around State Road 60. It belongs to the national Main Street movement, which, as Vero Beach 32963 put it in August 2024, focuses on revitalizing downtowns by promoting economic development and encouraging historic preservation through umbrella groups Main Street America and Florida Main Street. On its own website the group says it exists to help restore and revitalize historic downtowns and advocates for a thriving DownTown economy.
The Vero Beach program is independent of City Hall. A 2017 Vero News profile reported that Main Street receives both private and public funding but that most of its capital comes from membership fees and event proceeds, and that it works with the City of Vero Beach on infrastructure and the preservation of historic buildings through facade grants. Vero Beach 32963 noted in August 2024 that many of the 55 member organizations of Florida Main Street are affiliated with or funded by their city governments, while Main Street Vero Beach is not.
What is in the historic downtown along 14th Avenue?
The city's own description starts with the street plan. The City of Vero Beach Downtown page lists the existing historic street grid patterns and overall scale the town first developed with as a lasting asset, along with historic buildings, owners who have reinvested in them and the residential neighborhoods next door. Along 14th Avenue, the 2017 Vero News profile pointed to the marquee of the old Florida Theatre and the Pocahontas building as signature structures.
The north end of the district is civic ground. Pocahontas Park, the Heritage Center and the Vero Beach Community Center sit at 14th Avenue and 21st Street. In February 2026 Vero News reported that the six Rotary clubs of Indian River County were turning the 2005 Centennial Fountain at the park's corner into a planted Rotary Corner, on a spot first used for a 1931 public drinking fountain, and that the city had budgeted $1.4 million for playground, Heritage Center and Community Center improvements in Pocahontas Park.
Railroad history sits at the edge. The 2017 profile said Main Street leaders wanted to widen the group's boundary to take in buildings just outside it, such as the Vero Railroad Station. That 1903 depot, run by the Indian River County Historical Society, was rededicated with updated exhibits on July 9, 2026, Vero News reported. The shops themselves are mostly independent: the Main Street directory groups downtown Vero Beach into dining, galleries and studios, boutiques, fitness studios and a home goods district.
Which downtown events does Main Street Vero Beach run?
Events are the organization's best-known work. Downtown Friday, a street party with bands and vendors, runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the last Friday of each month, paused in summer, and has traditionally filled 14th Avenue north of State Road 60, according to Vero Beach 32963. The Main Street site listed a Downtown Friday Monster Mash for October 30, 2026 and a Meet Me On Main cocktail evening for October 8, 2026. Other monthly fixtures named by Vero News in 2022 were the First Friday Gallery Stroll and Coffee with the Mayor.
The Hibiscus Festival is the oldest brand. Vero News reported in April 2022 that the two-day festival along 14th Avenue had returned for the first time since 2019, built around a juried Fine Art and Fine Craft Show, and that it honors the Hibiscus City sobriquet coined in 1967. Proceeds support Main Street programs and a Miss Hibiscus scholarship.
Public art is the newest. The first Main Street Vero Beach Mural Festival ran November 7 to 9, 2025, with the Downtown Vero Beach Mural Art Project and the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce as partners. Vero News reported that 45 artists had applied by August 2025 and that organizers planned at least three permanent murals on building walls plus about a dozen 8-foot by 8-foot sealed panels. During the festival, a Mural Walk turned 14th Avenue into an outdoor gallery, Vero News reported in December 2025. In 2026 the avenue also hosted a free Patriotic 250th Party on May 29 and the Pioneers to Paradise Parade on the Fourth of July weekend.
How has the Main Street organization changed?
Leadership has turned over often. Vero Beach 32963 reported in August 2024 that the executive director hired in January 2023 had resigned that June after a dispute with the board, and that the board rehired the director who had served from 2019 through 2022. Before that, the paper said, Main Street Vero had a string of executive directors with short tenures. The post paid $45,000 a year in 2024.
The argument was about scope. The departing director wanted Main Street Vero Beach to act as the downtown's marketing agent and pursue state grants the way Main Street groups in Melbourne and Fort Pierce do; board leaders preferred to focus on events that draw people to 14th Avenue. Moving Downtown Friday south of State Road 60 twice in 18 months, at merchants' request, also divided business owners. Mayor John Cotugno said in August 2024 that the council would look at downtown marketing after the November election.
The ambitions were set out earlier. In 2017 the incoming director, trained in historic preservation, told Vero News she planned to expand the boundaries, improve branding and develop events that would raise consumer traffic along 14th Avenue, and that Vero Beach would host the Florida Main Street Annual Conference for the first time.
What has the City of Vero Beach planned for downtown?
Downtown plans in Vero Beach stack up over decades. The Downtown page archives a July 2, 1990 Redevelopment Program, a 1992 Downtown Redevelopment Plan, a December 18, 2000 revitalization strategy, an August 2008 Downtown Action Plan and a March 2013 State Road 60 traffic calming report. A retail market study by Gibbs Planning Group was presented on September 14, 2023, and the City Council approved the current master plan on July 23, 2024 after a charrette led by DPZ CoDesign. Two charter amendments to let more housing into the district followed on the November 5, 2024 ballot; WFLX reported that about 65 percent of voters opposed the density increase.
Traffic on State Road 60 is the other long argument. The eastbound and westbound halves of the highway, called the Twin Pairs, cut through downtown between the Florida East Coast Railway tracks and 20th Avenue. In December 2023 Vero News reported that the council, facing strong opposition to reducing lanes, was weighing smaller options such as bulb-outs and new crosswalks at 15th and 16th avenues, with Economic Development Zone funds as a possible way to pay for them.
Frequently asked questions
When is Downtown Friday in Vero Beach?

Is Main Street Vero Beach part of city government?
No. It is an independent nonprofit affiliated with Florida Main Street. Vero Beach 32963 reported in 2024 that, unlike many Florida Main Street programs, it is not funded by the City of Vero Beach and relies mainly on members and events.
Why is Vero Beach called the Hibiscus City?
Vero News reported in 2022 that the Hibiscus City nickname was coined in 1967 for the flowering shrubs common in the area. Main Street Vero Beach still stages a Hibiscus Festival with a juried art show along 14th Avenue.
Can more apartments be built in downtown Vero Beach?
Only within current limits. Higher density downtown requires a citywide referendum under the Vero Beach charter, and in November 2024 about 65 percent of voters rejected raising the limit from 17 to 36 units per acre, as reported by WFLX and the city.
