The Hibiscus Festival — Vero Beach, Florida

Main Street Vero Beach's spring festival on 14th Avenue, with a juried art show, the Miss Hibiscus pageant and a nod to the Hibiscus City nickname coined in 1967.

Short answer: The Hibiscus Festival is a spring art and music festival on 14th Avenue in historic downtown Vero Beach, presented by Main Street Vero Beach as a fundraiser for the downtown. A 2013 Vero News report traced it to 1953, and it honors the Hibiscus City nickname coined in 1967. Recent editions included a juried art show, the Miss Hibiscus pageant and a cycling ride. The most recent documented festival was in April 2022.

What is the Hibiscus Festival?

The Hibiscus Festival is a spring weekend of art, music and fundraising on 14th Avenue in historic downtown Vero Beach, presented by the nonprofit Main Street Vero Beach. It takes its name from the city's old nickname. A 2022 Vero News report said the event pays tribute to the Hibiscus City sobriquet, coined in 1967, which highlights the hibiscus plants that grow throughout Vero Beach.

The festival's roots run older than the nickname. When Main Street Vero Beach won the Dyer Difference Award in 2013, the announcement carried by Vero News said the festival originated in 1953 to celebrate the community in the historic downtown, and that the April 13, 2013 festival was attended by upwards of 12,000 people. All proceeds, the same release said, go into Main Street Vero Beach projects for the downtown district.

Why is Vero Beach the Hibiscus City?

The Hibiscus City label dates to 1967, according to Vero News, and the festival leans on it every spring. In 2022 festivalgoers could buy blooming hibiscus plants on 14th Avenue, paint hibiscus flowers on canvas at the Heritage Center and visit the Indian River Citrus Museum for the history of the Vero Beach citrus trade. In 2016 Main Street said it hoped area nurseries would hold a hibiscus plant sale in a new Garden Way on the festival grounds.

The Miss Hibiscus Pageant opens the festival week. It was held at the Heritage Center on 14th Avenue on a Thursday or Friday evening before the street festival in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The 2015 rules described by the Indian River Guardian limited the pageant to young women aged 15 to 19, judged on poise and confidence, community service, public speaking and stage presence by a five-judge panel. In 2022 Main Street said proceeds from the Vero Beach festival support a scholarship fund for Miss Hibiscus.

What happens at the festival?

The festival fills the length of 14th Avenue. The 2015 plan published by the Indian River Guardian put the juried art show on the north end of 14th Avenue from the Community Center to the Heritage Center, a Main Stage in the middle, and a Park Stage near the shuffleboard courts. Saturday hours that year were 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Sunday ran 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a smaller footprint from the Rotary Fountain to the Community Center.

Several pieces have repeated year to year in downtown Vero Beach. The Hibiscus Ride, run with the Vero Cycling Club, begins and ends at the Historical Society Train Station on 14th Avenue and has offered routes of about 11, 31, 62 and 100 miles; in 2016 the metric century route measured 67 miles. A shopping cart parade has local businesses decorate carts filled with groceries: the carts went to the Harvest Food and Outreach Center in 2014 and 2015, according to Vero News, and to United Against Poverty's Emergency Food Pantry in 2016. The Pilot Club served a pancake breakfast at the Community Center in 2016. In 2014 and 2010 the festival day began with a 5K, and in 2010 the run started at the Vero Beach Municipal Airport.

How did the art show grow?

Art took a larger role in the mid 2010s. An April 2014 Vero News account said Main Street Vero Beach narrowed the field that year to fine art and music, accepting about 50 percent of artist applicants, excluding vendors who did not handcraft their work, and adding a professional chalk art competition on 21st Street with four stages of music. The next year, the Indian River Guardian reported that the juried Fine Art and Fine Craft Show ran two days for the first time, with over 60 artists chosen from over 100 applicants in categories from ceramics and digital art to watercolor and wood, and cash prizes for first, second and third place.

The Vero Beach festival's own numbering in this period was shorter than its 1953 origin suggests. Main Street billed the April 12, 2014 event as the 11th annual Hibiscus Festival, the 2015 event as the 12th and the 2016 event as the 13th annual, when 44 artists showed work. That 2014 announcement described Main Street Vero Beach as a 15-year affiliate of the Florida Main Street program and a 19-year member of the National Main Street Center.

How do the city and county figure in?

The festival has needed city approvals and has sought county money. In April 2010, volunteers who organize the Hibiscus Festival received a proclamation from the Vero Beach City Council, according to Vero News. In January 2014 the council unanimously approved Main Street's request to serve alcohol at Downtown Friday events and the Hibiscus Festival, an approval that Vero News described as covering the festival's fine art and crafts show and its role as a Main Street fundraiser.

County tourism money was a harder sell. In June 2014 Main Street asked the Indian River County Tourist Development Council for $5,000 to help draw visitors from other parts of Florida. Vero News reported that Commissioner Peter O'Bryan, a former Main Street Vero Beach board member, noted the festival had traditionally been a local event, and the Board of County Commissioners unanimously followed the council's recommendation to deny the request.

When was the most recent festival?

The 2019 festival marked the city's centennial. Vero News reported that the 2019 Hibiscus Festival in historic downtown Vero Beach included the Fine Art and Fine Craft Show, vendor booths, the United Against Poverty Shopping Cart Parade and a Centennial Hibiscus History Ride that took cyclists to historic sites around town; ten young women competed in that year's pageant. No festival was held again until 2022: the executive director who joined Main Street Vero Beach the day after the 2019 festival was able to hold it once again that April.

The April 2022 festival was a two-day event on 14th Avenue built around the juried Fine Art and Fine Craft Show, with music, a drum circle on the lawn and hibiscus-themed activities, and it is the most recent edition documented in the sources reviewed for this page. As of October 8, 2026, the Main Street Vero Beach website lists Downtown Friday, Meet Me On Main, Mural Fest and Miracle on 14th among its events and gives the organization's office as 2046 14th Ave; no Hibiscus Festival date was posted there.
